Shildon was selected by the NRM as a site to house the reserve collection of railway vehicles and establish a National Rail Collections Centre. This will ensure that historically important railway vehicles, which are not currently housed in adequate accommodation, are held in secure and weather proof premises and moreover are accessible to the public for the first time. The new building will also contain offices, technical and research facilities, a retail outlet and catering facilities. The incorporation of the existing Museum and its associated buildings will enhance the environmental setting and add to the historical character of Locomotion. Shildon is one of the World’s oldest railway towns. The new Museum will give recognition to the significance of Shildon in Railway History and of railways to the Shildon community. There will be a high level of community involvement in the Museum and its operation. The Museum will be a centre for community activity and events. Volunteering opportunities will be developed and a conservation workshop will help to train local young people in conjunction with local businesses. The development of Locomotion, The National Railway Museum at Shildon will provide a reason for visiting Shildon. and create a major new tourist attraction of national importance. The attraction will add to the critical mass of tourist attractions within the region, complementing other attractions in the area such as the Darlington Railway Museum and the Darlington to Bishop Auckland Heritage Line. This project will make a significant contribution to the economic regeneration of Shildon and build upon the work already carried out there by the Shildon SRB Partnership. |
