The Club: Rise and Fall

The club was originally formed by a group of friends who originally wanted to practice WTF style TaeKwonDo. Over the years the club, as a member of Loughborough Student Clubs and Societies, continued to grow and eventually joined the athletic union. Unfortunately  2001-2002 was the club's final year and closed soon afterwards. The club struggled to differentiate its-self from the larger ITF club and failed to attract a new instructor after Master Neil Guest had to withdraw his excellent tuition.

Affiliation

The Olympic TaeKwonDo Club was affiliated to the World Tae Kwon Do Federation (WTF) through the British Tae Kwon Do Control Board (BTCB) and so also to the British Olympic Association. For more information on these relevant organisations click on the links to the side.

The Future

A new training facility has been opened at Loughborough University by Loughborough University, the BTCB and Sport England, to help develop the best players nationwide.  BUSA now recognises WTF rules as  the official platform for inter-varsity TKD competitions. It must surely only be a matter of time until the leading sporting university in the UK, namely Loughborough, sees the birth of a competitive WTF club.

Instruction

Today the club is no-longer functioning and if any new club was to reform it would be necessary to attract a committed, enthusiastic and, ideally, local instructor. Hopefuly with Loughborough now gaining the focus of the Taekwondo community an opportunity may arise for a new instructor or current DAN grade student at the university to take up the mantle and restart the club.

About this Site

You may think that considering the club is no more that there would not be much point in maintaining and developing this site. Three good reasons for keeping a web presence seem to come to mind: resurrection, information and redirection.

It is hoped that this site might act as a focal point for any parties interested in restarting the club. There were more than enough high grade practitioners at the university to keep it going, it seems we failed to contact these which led to the club's demise. If at any point the club is restarted the owner is very welcome to take over the running of this site and any items produced to make it.

It is also hoped that this site might help to inform anyone, lufbra students, studying ITF Taekwondo or thinking of starting at the ITF club of the existence of the WTF and to help clarify the difference between the two. In the past the club found it difficult to differentiate itself from the ITF club (see here) which was one reason it had difficulties.

Considering the reputation of Loughborough Univeristy's sporting background and the growing appeal of Taekwondo (WTF) nationally and internationally it might be useful to provide a point of contact for those trying to find information about Taekwondo at Loughborough, for more click here.
