I shall use this section to describe who I am, and why I do my hobby. I shall also look at equipment and similar things which relate to UE. Site Details I decided to create a site for a number of reasons. The main reason being that so many others before me had created sites, so I felt obliged to create my own site so I could also share what I found. The other reason was so I could practice HTML coding, which I did use for a period of time, but progress with it on my site was slow, so I managed to source Microsoft FrontPage which is so practical in what I need to do. The original site was created in June 2005, and has been a bit slow to get off, but now is going on fine. Since the site has been online, I have received just under 1000 visitors, perhaps most of them being me checking various parts of my site, but I have had a gradual trickle of people viewing what I have online at the moment. Who I am Brains, an 18 year old from Horsham, West Sussex, who has a passion for old things. Whether it is old machinery or buildings, everything of that sort fascinates me. However, this site is designed to primarily study and look at the old building side of things. I have been interested in old things since I was very young. Even when I went on holiday, I was always stumbling across old things; be it from old pill boxes to derelict piers, I would always find something. What Urban exploration, or UE as it sometimes known is an up and coming activity that has become very popular with many people. It involves going to buildings which are old and abandoned, experiencing how they are and documenting the place for reference. All around the country are abandoned buildings. Once these buildings are abandoned, it is only a matter of time before nature takes hold and ruins these buildings, however not all the time the influence of nature is the cause of ruination- often the buildings reach there demise because of careless action caused by so called “chavs” who apparently get pleasure out of destroying things. Where This site primarily focuses on places in the Sussex area. I could do a wider range of places in counties further a field, but I am only young. I do not possess a car to travel around to far flung places, nor do I have the money to fund a car yet. Anyway, the places we have in Sussex are fairly interesting, and we regularly turn up new places all the time. I did do UE abroad as well. When I was in France in 2004, I stumbled across many old stone huts in the mountains. In 2005, I went to Italy, and I spent around two weeks in the mountains (Dolomites). We went to one place in the mountains which faced across to Austria. Here there were many old trenches and lengths of barbed wire strewn about dating to the World Wars. When Most places that I have visited have been derelict for some time, and as a result a lot of people have already visited these places. Therefore, I can make the assumption that these places are always open for viewing, so I can pop along when I feel like. However, when I discover a new place, I try to get there as soon as possible because there is no telling whether the site may become back in use again. Why I had no idea that UE had a cult following like it does. I always went to places when I was younger out of curiosity, and not the fact that I did it for fun. However, it was when James Hall invited me to one of his trips that I discovered that there was so much more to UE that previously thought. It has now become something of a hobby to me, and this is why I have created this site so that I can share my discoveries with others. Equipment During my expeditions, I carry around equipment which I swear by. Here it is:-
