Search for the BEST

What is the "BEST?"
The most important elements of the best telemark skis for my purpose are as follows:
Considering these points, I first obtained the two sets: Garmont Monashee & Fischer Europe 99 Crown with short leather boots.
But I could not ski with such short boots.

Granite Gear Telecuff

Dec 2001

The first step was to get something to hold my ankle upright.
I bought a pair of "Granite Gear Telecuff." It is a plastic cuff to wrap one's ankle.
The effect was ---- obvious! Now I was able to ski with the leather boots so far, though not in a telemark style.
I wanted to try to hold my ankle tighter.
I bought a pair of plastic boots, Scarpa T-3.
I did not feel so much difference from the Telecuff effect.

I tried telemark skiing several times with those equipments in 2001-2002 season.
Finally I could not ski in telemark position.

Scarpa T-3

Scarpa T-1 (attached to St. Elias)

In the begining of 2002-2003 season, I bought another pair of plastic boots, Scarpa T-1 as the T-3 I bought a year before was a little too small for my feet.

I went to a telemark school of Mr. Hasebe in Tsumagoi.
I skied with Monashee & T-1, and learned to ski in telemark position so far.

At the time, Mr. Hasebe suggested that T-1 might be too hard for such a short ski as Monashee 150cm.
He also suggested that step-cut on the sole might sometimes be an obstacle for a smooth turn.
I wanted a longer single-camber ski to fit T-1.
I bought Black Diamond St. Elias Waxless.
It is 191cm --- a little too long for me, but I could not find a cheap alternative.

One is with skin.

A pair of Outland
The binding is NNN-BC type.

On the other hand, I wanted skis more for backcountry wandering.
It is because:
Monashee's step-cut is bear-claw style and does not work well in uphill situation, and
Europe 99 Crown is sometimes too narrow or too long.

I bought Karhu Outland 175cm.
It is soft double-camber ski with partial steel edges.

I had bought a NNN-BC boots for my wife, so she can also use this ski.
After all, I had more than enough.
I prcticed with St. Elias.

But one day, I found a Morotto Magico, an old racing ski, in the internet auction.
It was cheap enough. I placed a bid half out of curiosity, but it went through!
Anyway, Mr. Hasebe (and a pro-shop also) suggested me to use skis without step-cut. It was a good chance to try one.

The ski came with carve plates, but without bindings.
I put cable type bindings, but later changed them to 3 pin bindings: the cable was too short for T-1.

First of all, I must be able to ski in telemark style.
I will practice with Morotto & T-1 on ski grounds.
It is only after I can do well that I go to backcountry with waxless skis.

Such a long way!
It will be in 2003-2004 season!

I regret I must put "to be continued" on this serch for the best equipment.
