7.0WIRE / Team Italy 2001. brought many changes in the National Team. If before it was Angiolino Frigoni, now it's Marco Bonitta who calls the shots. If before it was Mauri, now it's Manuela Leggeri who wears the captain's stripe. Youth development seem to be the program under the new coach. First time nationals are chosen to play in lesser (not credited in the FIVB) tourneys to give them experience and also to avoid injuries for the veteran players. The program is not going as well as expected with Team Italy having a pretty bad start: failing to qualify for the Grand Prix and placing 6th in the BCV Volleymasters. They seem to be gaining ground though as they swept the competition to qualify for the 2002 World Championships and placing 2nd in the invitational Salonpas Cup in Brazil.
