Martin's
Modern Jive Directory for the Thames Valley,
West Surrey and Chilterns

September 2005 onwards

This page last updated: 07/09/2005

This site is intended to give fellow dancers, in the above areas, an idea of what is happening in Modern Jive during the week and at weekends in the coming months. I endeavour to keep it as accurate as possible, but there is no accounting for last minute cancellations/changes at regular weekday venues or freestyles, so if you roll-up somewhere to find nothing happening, that is not down to me. In other words, I leave the final responsibility in the hands of the dancer to check.

While providing the information, I have included the postcodes of all the venues where available, so that you are able to find them on the web on a map. I suggest sites like www.streetmap.co.uk or www.viamichelin.com. The latter gives driving directions from your own postcode.

Door Prices

I have not included the door price of the freestyles, but one can assume they are about £6 to £10. If they are anything more than that, I will say so, especially when we get into the silly area of £13+. Silly door prices start to appear around Christmas time, but I will be vigilant on your behalf.

As regards the weekdays, I have included the door price and the extra beginners fee where I can find it.

Weekday Closures

I will also notify you of any closures on weekday venues as this does happen from time to time and causes untold problems. Watch for Notes at the bottom of the relevant weekday page.

The all important regular venue links

Here are the links to the various pages:

  • Sundays
  • Mondays
  • Tuesdays
  • Wednesdays
  • Thursdays
  • Fridays

  • Venues

This is my completely subjective opinion of venues that I have visited:

    Twyford (Ceroc TV) -

    • Best floor in the area (like glass); good ventilation when doors open; basic seating and bar area; socialable, but can get noisy; reasonable bar prices.

    Woking (RebelRoc/Ceroc Surrey)

    • Great air con; good floor; constant supply of free iced water; tables and chairs fine; disconcerting splits in the floor surface.

Windsor (Leisure Centre) (Ceroc Windsor) -

    • Huge hanger-type sports hall; no shortage of dance space; dimly-lit; can get hot with tin roof; average floor; other side of hall in a different time zone, so if you want to dance with him/her on the other side - set off early!

Windsor (New Windsor Community Centre) (The Dance Inn) -

    • Efficient air con; good floor; tricky to find but worth the trip.

    Fleet (Ceroc) -

    • Good size venue; with upstairs for extra classes; main hall always hot despite having the doors open!

    Newbury (Ginger Jive) -

    • Good purpose-built venue with US airbase decor; nice floor; seating and tables set back off the floor; a cow to find though!

    Some useful modern jive websites

    Jiveoholics Anonymous

Excellent database of Modern Jive moves, some of them are animated; in fact some 600 are here, plus fascinating advice.

    UK Jive

Complete list in the UK; really comprehensive

    Dance Crave

    Footnote:

Now for more malapropisms from www.malapropism.co.uk

A malapropism is the incorrect use of a word for one sounding similar, usually with comic effect.
Some good examples that made me laugh:

    • The dentist can't give you gas without an ateethesist
    • Neither of us could figure out the plumbing so I took out his cock, stuck my own in and everything was rosie-dosie
    • He's going into hospital to get an anorak removed from his eye
    • I'm dropping our goalkeeper, he's too erotic
