RIPPING A DVD MOVIE ONLY FROM A DVD9

OR CONVERTING AN AVI FILE, TO A DVDR MPEG FILE

Required programs.

DVD2SVCD v1.1.3 build 2 (build 3 has bugs)

http://www.dvd2svcd.org/

CCE ENCODER v2.5 (Only use v2.5) or TMPGenc

Open DVD2SVCD and start at the ENCODER tab.

.

  1. I use CCE as the encoder! Its much better quality and about 5-6x faster than TMPGenc.
  2. Browse to the .exe of the CCE encoder file.
  3. Select your encoding method, CBR or VBR.

CBR codes in realtime (ie 90mins for a 90min file) and gives great results so I always use this.   .

Now click the MISC  tab.

  1. Select your source file type, DVD or AVI. Make sure the output is MPEG-2.
  2. Select process priority for NORMAL if using the PC for other tasks while coding.

If leaving it alone to code up then set to HIGHER. Set DVD2SVCD level to ADVANCED

The DVDRIP tab.

Depending on whether you choose DVD or AVI in the MISC tab will open and close the

DVDRIP tab. If ripping from DVD select ACTIVATE DVD RIPPING. (Make sure the

DVD has been unlocked before you start by playing it first with a software player, eg POWERDVD.

Now the AUDIO tab

  1. Select your code up audio bitrate.

Tick "Do not convert audio" for a DVD rip to keep optimum audio quality and DD5.1

224kbs is normally adequate for an AVI conversion, as it was probably

converted to less than this when made into the AVI so going any higher would

be a waste of bitrate unless its AC3 audio..

  1. Select output mode to STEREO. Dont choose MPEG5.1 as this is NOT DD5.1, and 99% of standalones will downmix it back to 2 channel again anyway. For DD5.1 output see the very bottom.
  2. Make sure the audio downsample box is not ticked if making a dvd mpeg.

Now pick the BITRATE   tab.

1  Select your disc size. This determines the final output size of the MPEG file.

To keep high quality from a DVD movie rip going back onto a DVDR, set at about 4300 to fill the disc.

For AVI's, I found setting to about 2200 lets you make 2 files that are big enough to keep

good quality, but then two can be fitted onto a DVDR for multiple movie DVDs.

2        Set the max bitrate to 7000..

  1. Setting the min bitrate to anything about 1500-ish works fine.
  2. Set the Max average bitrate. This is used in both VBR and CBR.

Set Max Avg to 6500 and depending on selected file size and the movie length, it will always calculate to as high as it can fit on.

5        Uncheck this box. Its there to stop you making an SVCD mpeg that is too big for a CDR.

But as we are making a DVD mpeg for a DVDR then we don’t need this warning.

Now the FRAMESERVE tab

1 Not much here, just select DVD resolution from the dropdown box and Bicubic resize.

The CDIMAGE tab

  1. Again not much, just check the DON’T MAKE IMAGES box.

And finally go to the CONVERSION tab

  1. Now select your source file. Either browse to the AVI or if DVD was chosen as source

a disc icon will be in the browse bar, just click the disc icon and the IFO from the DVD will be loaded. The film details will come up.

  1. Select the aspect ratio you want coded.
  2. If the source is NTSC and you want to convert it to PAL click this box. Its a 100% proper conversion (No judder at all)
  3. Make sure you have plenty of spare room on your HDD for temp files. You will need about 12-14Gb for

a DVD RIP, about 6-8gb for an AVI conversion.

  1. Click GO and come back in about 2-3hrs if doing CBR, then author and burn the .MPG file you just made.
  2. If the file was AC3 and you want DD5.1 output, run the extracted_audio_1.ac3 file
  3. through AC3Machine and use the outputted AC3 and the encoded_video_1.mpv to author instead of the MPG.
