How I breed the Brunei Beauty.

Here I would like to share my experience of how I breed the Brunei Beauty. The method I am using may be different from others but I am comfortable with what I am doing now.

Setup Tank

Put breeding pair in a 20 gallon tank with cover with black plastic bag. Water level 10inch, sponge filter. Partial water change weekly and siphon any left over food and waste. Alternative feeding of buffalo heart, frozen Bloodworm, fresh prawn and pellet. Feeding morning and evening only.

Matting process

Normally it is easy to recognized when the Female is ready to mate. The  thick black bar or stripes, caudal fin shrink and the lips has 2 dots and belly bulging. Their matting time varies, from my experience early in the morning and mid noon, the process will last about 4 to 5 hours.

The Male will wrap the female to release the eggs, once egg is out, both of them will pick the eggs and the female will pass on to the male mouth for incubation. The hatching rate depends on the size of the female. In every hatch, 10 to 15 % only male.

Incubation period

If you look at the mouth at the lower jaw of the male its full of eggs. The female is also holding its eggs in her mouth this will be release when the male is ready to accept it. Incubation period is 30 to 35 days in the male mouth before being release as a fry. Male will release the fry out from it's mouth in batches. The fries comes in various sizes from 0.5cm to 1 cm. The pairs are to remain in the tank to look after the fries 3 to 7 days..

Bringing up the fries

Feed the fries with small amount of Artemia and micro-worms. Picture shows the 2 days old fry, look at the belly full of Artemia and micro worms.

30 days old.

Other problems and diseases

The following pictures shows fries with burst belly.  This usually happens 1 to 4 days old fries when they ate too much.

The male Brunei Beauty both eyes are infected and this normally happens

I prefer to keep them with cut PVC pipes, small rocks and gravel for their hideouts and no plants.
