Bridgestone set to fight back

F1 - 10th July '03

As the F1 World Championship battle hots up, Japanese tyre maker Bridgestone is determined to fight back and give Ferrari the chance to take the 2003 title.

Bridgestone have faced criticism in recent weeks as the title challenge of Michael Schumacher faltered in the wake of a Williams and Michelin resurgence. Now the manufacturer is planning to test radical new tyres this week in Barcelona in an attempt to give Ferrari the edge once in what might be the closest title battle in decades.

Technical manager Hisao Suganuma said: "We are going to try totally different tyres and we will need to know how they work. It might work, itm ight not, but let's see."

The test is critical for Ferrari's title chances with F1's summer testing ban looming that will prevent teams running until just before the Italian GP. Bridgestone are expected to bring any new tyres that are successfully tested to the British GP next weekend in a bid re-ignite the title challenge of Michael Schumacher.

Despite watching the BMW Williams team take back-to-back one-twos, Michael Schumacher is still upbeat about his title chances and refused to blame Bridgestone for the fall in performance: "We just have to improve the whole thing. We will do that, and we will come back. I think we are clever enough to find that little bit it takes".
