Richard Burns has been withdrawn from the Rally of Great Britain due to a mystery illness. The Peugeot driver's withdrawal has wrecked his chances of taking the 2003 World Championship which will be decided on the Rally of Great Britain.
Reports suggest Burns passed out at the wheel of his car whilst driving to Cardiff to begin preperations for the event which starts this Thursday. The Englishman was immediately taken to hospital to undergo tests but no statement has been made regarding the nature of the illness.
Burns had been hoping to add a second world title to the one he won in 2001 with Subaru. However his inability to compete his scuppered that chance and the Peugeot team have been forced to field Hyundai refugee Freddie Loix in Burns' place. Loix was dropped by Hyundai when the Korean manufacturer withdrew from the WRC earlier this year.
A statement is expected later today on Burns' condition.
