Burns: too early for 2004 talk

WRC - 14th March '03

Richard Burns has played down speculation linking him to a move back to the Subaru World Rally team. The former world champion is rumoured to be at the top of Subaru's wish list of drivers to replace the retiring Tommi Makinen.

"I know that I have no contract for 2004 and this is something I will be looking at in the near future", said Burns. When asked about the rumours linking him to former employer Subaru, Burns seemed pleased the team were registering an interest: "It's nice to have options out there."

Burns left Subaru in 2001 and the legal wrangle the ensued between the team and Burns seemed destined to blight the relationship. However comments from Subaru team boss David Lapworth suggest Burns would be welcomed back warmly by his former team.

Lapworth told Autosport magazine: "There is no outstanding bad feeling on either part from what happened in 2001. If Richard is on the market, he's on our list and we certainly wouldn't rule him out of coming back."

Burns took his one and only world championship title with Subaru but is still without a WRC win with current team Peugeot.
