CART starts want Brands GP race

CART - 8th May '03

Top drivers in the Champ Car series want next year's London Champ Car Trophy to run on the full Grand Prix circuit despite series boss Chris Pook preferring to race on the shorter 'Indy' track.

Despite a large crowd, CART racers such as series leader Paul Tracy believe fans would witness a greater spectacle if the Champ Cars raced on the full GP circuit. "If you talk to any driver who's looked at the long circuit, everybody's like 'Yeah, let's go on it'," said Tracy. "I hope that's where we end up running because we'd like to show our European fans what our cars are capable of on a big track."

Former F1 champion and vocal CART supporter Mario Andretti supported Tracy comments suggesting the prestige of the GP circuit is what CART deserves: "It's the prestige factor...these cars deserve the GP circuit. That has to be the ultimate goal."

Drivers are aware of the large amount of safety work that would need to be done to the GP track to bring it up to scratch. Tracy's team-mate Patrick Carpentier said: "We could not race on it as it is now...it would be a major safety issue."

The championship is unlikely to move the London Trophy to the full GP circuit for 2004. The 'bowl' shape of the Indy circuit offers comprehensive views of the track, something that is a rariety on road courses and organisers are keen to ensure fans see as much of the action as possible.
