Martin: we can win in New Zealand

WRC - 28th March '03

Ford team leader Markko Martin reckons his new Focus rally car can win first time out in New Zealand next month.

The Estonian believes the Focus RS WRC03 will be good enough to challenge Peugeot and Citroen for victory in its first competitive outing. "The strongest point about the car is that it has no weak points," said Martin. "Everybody is really excited about this. The engineers do still have some work to do here and there, but the car feels ready."

The new Focus was revealed at the headquarters of Ford's world rally base on Wednesday and takes its design cues from the all-conquering Peugeot 206. With a massive front air damn and huge Peugeot-style rear spoiler, Ford believe the new Focus will be a contender on every rally surface.

"This car can win in New Zealand, Finland, on asphalt, on gravel. It will suit every kind of rally," commented Martin.
