The historic city of Pau has entered the race to host the first French round of the Champ Car World Series.
Steeped in history, the demanding French street circuit has hosted F1, F3000 and recently an invitational F3 race. Now race organisers have entered into competition with the town of Marseille to host a round of the CART series in 2004. President Jen-Paul Pasquet admitted: "It could happen. We have had dialogue with Chris Pook and a Champ Car race in Pau would be very good."
As revealed by MOTORSPORTFORUM (23rd May 2003), Marseille is hoping to attract the CART series as part of its planned three race "European Tour" next year. Now Pau is hoping to attract the attention of Champ Car organisers and convince them of the value of racing in the historic city, capatilising on its racing heritage and the growing popularity of CART in Europe.
Organisers are expected to make substantial layout changes to the track in preparation for the arrival of the Champ Car series.
