Indycar veteran Bryan Herta will replace the injured Dario Franchitti at the Texas and Pikes Peak rounds of the IRL Indycar Series.
The former CART driver, who was linked to a F1 testing drive, will pilot the number 27 Andretti-Green Dallara-Honda while Franchitti recovers from back injuries sustained last month. Franchitti injured himself in a motorcycle accident and has been forced to miss the IRL round at Motegi, Japan and the Indianapolis 500 where Robby Gordon will drive his Apline/Archipelago/Motorola car.
Herta has never raced in the IRL series before but will get his first taste of all-oval racing in a test session this weekend (11th & 12th) at Pikes Peak. Herta has also been named as Andretti-Green's reserve driver in case of a rain delay. Robby Gordon is attempting to win both the Indy 500 and the Winston Cup evening race at Charlotte on the same day and a delayed start at Indy will prevent him from racing in the 500.
"This is a fantastic opportunity," Herta admitted, "I was pleased when Michael [Andretti] called and asked if I could drive for Andretti Green Racing until Dario gets better. I'm excited to drive for a high calibre team like Andretti Green."
