IRL Indycar champion Sam Hornish has blamed the influx of drivers from the rvial Champ Car series for the multiple crashes at the recent Indy Japan 300.
Panther Racing star Hornish suggested that driving standards have fallen in the IRL since the arrival of Champ Car stars such as Michael Andretti, Tony Kannan and Scott Dixon who have all been involved in serious accidents this season.
"Everybody was having a contest to see who could knock the wall down," said Hornish after the Japanese race. "Look at the races last year (for comparison) - there were quite a few crashes between guys who are former CART champions. It's frustrating."
The Indy Japan race saw 11 of 24 cars involved in accidents, including one that put Andretti-Green racer Tony Kannan in doubt for the IRL's showpiece event, the Indianapolis 500 next month. Kannan was taken to hospital with a broken wrist, an injury complicated by the fact Kannan already has metal plates in his wrist following a previous crash. Target Ganassi racer Dixon also suffered a slight wrist fracture but will be fit for the 500 in May,
Hornish's spotter Pancho Carter firmly laid blame at the door of recent CART converts for the spate of accidents: "Guys were racing a lot closer than they need to at these speeds, I guess its the way they race over there in the other series."
