McRae confident of Citroen potential

WRC Posting - Motorsport Forum - 12th December '02

Colin McRae has revealed that there is every possibility he could take victory in his first outing with new team Citroen. Prohibited from speaking publicly about his Citroen chances due to his outstanding contractual commitments with Ford, the 1995 World Champion was able to make his first public statement after an extended test in the south of France.

McRae told the Times newspaper: "I am sure I can with it, and why not the Monte? It is one of the rallies that the car has a realistic chance of wining on."

The Scotsman has never won the traditional season opener but is confident the 2003 event could see him break his barren streak. "My record is not so good but this car has huge potential."

McRae's comments will come as a welcome relief to his fans and neutral supporters of the WRC. Following four frustrating seasons with Ford, the Scotsman is looking to re-ignite his championship hopes at Citroen. From initial testing in Wales and France McRae has been impressed with the Xsara and the car seems close to being a genuine title contender in only its first full season of WRC competition. McRae's comments will also be a welcome lift for fans of the WRC that are looking for the likes of Citroen to challenge the dominant Peugeot team in 2003.
