The Subaru World Rally Team want Colin McRae to lead their 2004 campaign if current driver Tommi Makkinen quits.
McRae, who is currently on a one-year contract with Citroen Sport, is believed to be Subaru's number one choice should Makkinen retire at the end of 2003. Makkinen, a multiple world champion is rumoured to be ready to quit World Rallying at the end of the season after two indifferent years at Subaru.
The decision over McRae's future is very much likely to rest with the relative performance of his Citroen Xsara this season. McRae started the season brightly with a second place in Monte Carlo but since then has faded as the dominant Peugeot team have stepped up the pressure. The future of Richard Burns may also play a role as the Englishman has claimed that a return to Subaru may be what is needed to help him win a second World Championship.
If Subaru fail to lure McRae or Burns for 2004 the team is also thought to be interested in Alister McRae. The Mitsubishi driver was left without a drive this season by Mitsubishi's decision to withdraw from the WRC. The Scot's contract with the team expires at the end of 2003 and he may be forced into looking elsewhere for the top rally seat.
