Newman calls on team owners to buy CART

CART - 8th August '03

Team-owner Paul Newman has called on his rivals to support a bid to take over CART, the sanctioning body of the Champ Car series.

A consortium of team owners including Jerry Forsythe, Paul Gentilozzi and Kevin Kalkhoven are aiming to take CART back into private ownership. The championship sanctioning body is currently a publicly traded asset, however the recent problems encountered by the Champ Car series and the subsidies used to support new teams this season have crippled the organisation. Returning CART to private ownership is considered one of the few options available to save the series.

"It's important that as many team owners as possible buy share in the group, " he told AUTOSPORT. "I'd like to see Bobby Rahal and a bunch of these guys buy in. I'm definitely committed, " confirmed the co-owner of the Newman-Haas team.

CART was forced to spend substantial amounts this season to support the Champ Car series, subsidising teams and individual races. And recently the organisation admitted it could not do so again next season, leaving few solutions as many of the newest teams and races are still not financially strong enough to be independent of CART.
