Pollock launches CART squad for 2003

CART - 20th January '03

Craig Pollock has launched his newly formed CART team for the 2003 season. The Scot, who is building his team around the remains of the defunct PacWest outfit, has established PK Racing in partnership with businessman Kevin Kalkhoven and speculation is rife over who will drive for the team.

The team will be based at PacWest's old headquarters where Pollock has secured a 12-month lease in anticipation of running a one-car team this season. The move sees the former BAR Formula 1 boss return to team management since the end of 2001.

No driver has been announced at this stage but several are in the frame including former BAR test driver Patrick Lemarie and ex-Toyota F1 racer Mika Salo. The Finn has been in talks with a view to securing a race seat in either the CART series or the DTM touring car series in Germany. Certainly, the arrival of Salo to the CART ranks would be a boost in light of losses to the IRL and the veteran who has raced for Sauber, BAR and Ferrari would bring a great deal of experience to fledgling team.

Pollock's move will undoubtedly re-ignite speculation that Jacques Villeneuve will leave F1 at the end of the 2003 season and re-join CART. With BAR bosses hinting last season that Villeneuve's future at the team was in doubt, a return to CART with Pollock's new squad is a distinct possibility.
