Webber: rumours hurt team

F1 - 13th May '03

Mark Webber has admitted that rumours surrounding his team mate Antonio Pizzonia have disrupted the Jaguar team's progress this season.

As was revealed by MOTORSPORTFORUM, Jaguar were considering axeing Pizzonia in favour of McLaren tester Alex Wurz. Jaguar have, however performed a massive u-turn and have informed Pizzonia that his seat is safe for the rest of the season. But Webber suggests that the damage has already been done.

Webber, who has made an impressive start to his maiden season with Jaguar told reporters that the rumours had created a "tense atmosphere" within the team which was "not a good thing". The Australian now hopes that with rumours about Pizzonia's future on hold until the end of the season the team can focus entirely on continuing to make progress with this season's car.

Alex Wurz meanwhile is expected to be kept on by McLaren as test driver, despite the arrival of Pedro de la Rosa. It was widely expected that de la Rosa would be the replacement for Wurz once he moved to Jaguar but now it seems the lanky Austrian will have to wait until 2004 for another shot at F1 glory.
