F1-refugee Mika Salo is expected to sign for Craig Pollock's PK Racing team later this year. The Finn, who was dumped by the Toyota F1 team at the end of last season, has set himself the target of organising a second PK Racing car for later this year.
Speaking at CART's 2003 Spring Training at Sebring Salo said, "I have been pushing Craig to run a second car and hopefully that will happen later in the season."
Salo briefly raced for Pollock at BAR when he stood in for the injured Ricardo Zonta in 1999 before doing the same for Michael Schumacher at Ferrari. It is thought that Salo would have taken the starting grid this month at St Petersburg if PK Racing had formed sooner. The team was only launched officially last month and team boss Craig Pollock indicated that was not enough time to prepare two cars.
"We're trying to get a second car organised. That's definitely the plan, "said Salo. "I'm here for a look at things."
Salo, who's only racing commitments for this year is a one-off deal to partner Frank Biela and Perry McCarthy in an Audi UK R8 at Le Mans, is confident of putting together a package for later in the 2003 season. The move would see PK Racing move to a two car outfit and bolster the ranks of the ChampCar grid to 19. CART announced this week that the series had at worst achieved the 18 car minimum required to run as planned.
