Salo's CART chances stalled until 2004

CART - 21st March '03

Former F1 driver Mika Salo is unlikely to make an appearance on the ChampCar grid this season.

The F1 veteran was known to be working with the newly formed PK Racing squad to secure a second seat alongside lead driver Patrick Lemarie (MOTORSPORTFORUM 13th February). However complications in securing funding and delays in PK Racing receiving another chassi have wrecked any chance of Salo securing a deal.

Team manager Russell Cameron told AUTOSPORT magazine: "We have all the equipment except the chassi but that requires a 12 to 14 week lead time, so when you talk about getting the funding in place, that's 16 to 18 weeks of lead time and that's getting pretty late in the year."

Salo is thought to still be keen on racing in ChampCars in 2004 and Cameron admitted the PK Racing team was still considering running a second car next season and Salo would be in contention for the drive.

Finn Salo attended CART's Spring Training earlier in the year with PK Racing following his sacking by the Toyota F1 team at the end of 2002. Salo drove for Tyrell, Sauber, BAR, Ferrari and Toyota during his F1 career.
