BMW Williams are rumoured to be poised to sign Mark Webber in the wake of Juan Montoya's defection to McLaren for 2005. The Australian has impressed at Minardi and Jaguar and is set for a move into the big league.
The space that Montoya's move has left will be one of the most prized seats in F1. It is thought unlikely that Williams will sign David Coulthard in a straight swap for Montoya. Coulthard is expected to be the subject of interest from Toyota and potentially Jaguar should they lose Webber.
Webber has impressed the F1 establishment and his combatative racing style coupled with a hard-working approach to car development would fit well at Williams. The Aussie would also represent a cost-effective replacement for the outgoing Montoya who is set to receive a higher salary at McLaren.
Webber will undoubtedly face stiff competition for the Williams seat. Other contenders could be Rubens Barrichello, who's Ferrari contract expires at the end of 2004, Giancarlo Fisichella who has made no secret of his desire to secure a top line seat and a host of young guns including Nico Rosberg and possibly even Nelisinho Piquet.
