In a hastily agreed deal, Minardi's Justin Wilson has signed to race for the Jaguar team for the remainder of the 2003 season. As predicted by MOTORSPORTFORUM (20th July), Jaguar have signed Wilson to replace the troubled Antonio Pizzonia, who will be dropped to the role of tester.
Wilson's signing comes after a turbulent maiden season in F1 for Brazilian rookie Pizzonia. Pizzonia has struggled to come to terms with F1, and has been overshadowed by his team-mate Mark Webber. The Jaguar team believe that dropping Pizzonia back to testing duties, with an option to race in 2004, is the best solution for him as he struggles through his rookie season. While Pizzonia has struggled, Wilson has impressed with his lightning starts and race pace relative to experienced team-mate Jos Verstappen. The Briton has now sealed a dream move to the historically British Jaguar squad.
Wilson will make his debut for the team at Hockenheim in a fortnight, but will be unable to test his Jaguar before first practice on Friday. Due to the summer testing ban imposed on teams, Jaguar are not permitted to test outwith race weekends until just before the Hungarian GP.
