RESPECT comes to town
Friday 27th February 2004

Mark Steel addresses RESPECT meeting

RESPECT was launched at the University of York today by comedian and writer Mark Steel.  The RESPECT coalition gives us a real chance to reach out to all those who were involved in the anti war movement and to all those who are fed up with the lies and disrespect of the working class, which is what we have become to expect from New Labour.

For more information about RESPECT go to www.respectcoalition.org

Further local RESPECT meetings are listed in the events section of this site.

York Unity Launch Meeting
Monday 16th February 2004

Around 80 local residents including pensioners, students and trade unionists turned out on a rainy Monday night for the launch meeting of York Unity, a community campaign to oppose the fascist BNP. The meeting heard speeches from Sabby Dhalu from the national Unite Against Fascism campaign and from Cllr David Wilde, a former Lord Mayor of York.

All agreed that we need to reach out with confidence to the anti-racist majority in York and challenge the BNP head-on. The meeting voted to establish York Unity as a continuing campaign and to affiliate to Unite Against Fascism. Further meetings and action including a local march and rally are planned in the run-up to the Euro elections in June.

York Against The War Public Meeting

Thursday 22nd January 2004

A public meeting at the University of York was held by York Against The War, titled 'End the occupation of Iraq/Freedom for Palestine/Defend civil liberties'.  The meeting was a resounding success, with approximately 450 people in the audience.  This was the same number of people who attended a YATW meeting 12 months ago, at the heigh of the build up to war.

The meeting started with a minutes silence in memory of Tom Hurndall, and all others who have died in the conflict.

First to speak was Anas Altikriti, President of the Muslim Association of Britain, followed by Lindsey German, convener of Stop the War coalition and finally George Galloway MP.
