A Game of Thrones is the first book in George R.R. Martin's A Song of Ice and Fire series, which goes like this. Ready? Most of the action takes place in the Seven Kingdoms, where three powerful families (the Starks, the Lannisters, and the Baratheons) rebelled against their insane king Aerys Targaryen. Robert Baratheon, the man who led the rebel armies, is appointed king. However, King Robert is a soldier, not a ruler, and asks Ned Stark to serve as his second-in-command in the coveted position of Hand of the King. Unfortunately, as Ned tries to discover who murdered his predecessor and who attacked and crippled his young son, he becomes drawn into a web of plotting and betrayal as the queen, her brothers, and the nobles at court conspire for power. The plots come to a head when the Lannisters assassinate King Robert and execute Ned Stark on false charges. Robert's two brothers, the boy who claims to be his son, and Ned Stark's son now claim the throne. Civil war follows! Meanwhile, sinster and evil beings are stirring beyond the Wall that separates their icy northern wastes from the Seven Kingdoms, things that have no love for mortal men -- and on the other side of the ocean, Daenerys, the last surviving child of House Targaryen, is sold in marriage to a tribal chieftain for his soldiers which will re-conquer the Seven Kingdoms. "In the game of thrones, you win or you die. There is no middle ground." -- Queen Cersei Lannister |

The Books
There are currently 3 books in the series: A Game of Thrones, A Clash of Kings, and A Storms of Swords Parts I and II. The fourth book will be called A Feast for Crows. The book itself has yet to be bound and printed, but the lastets release date is August 2004, although the release date has been pushed back so often it could be '05 by now.
Spoilers for A Feast for Crows
I have gathered some spoilers for Book 4, which will have to do until the book is finally released... Most are gleaned from A Song of Ice and Fire Forum, the "Arms of the Kraken" novella published in Dragon Magazine #305, and from George's readings at various cons around the world.
It has been released that there will be 2 new PoVs for Book 4. Personally, I'm hoping for Aerion Damphair and Cersei, but it seems most likely that one will be ... (shudders) ... Brienne of Tarth. Also, Sam Tarly's PoV will probably be abandoned and Arya's and Bran's drastically shortened (finally).
The prologue will be the first of its kind, in that it will last for 200-odd pages(!) and will feature seven PoVs instead of one, all of them new (e.g. Cersei, Aeron Damphair, Asha Greyjoy, Arianne Martell, Ser Arys Oakheart, and Areo Hotah).
UPDATE: Finally, George has given us a taste of what's to come. I can now present to you, my loyal fans, the first published complete chapter from A Feast for Crows.
