We play a wide variety of music in the band and hope we have something for all tastes! Heres some of the new music that we will be playing this semester:

  • Slaughter on 10th Avenue
  • Gaelforce
  • Braveheart
  • An American in Paris
  • Windows of the World

Welcome

Welcome to the website for the University of Sheffield Concert Band; part of the Music Players Society. On this site you can find all the information you need to know like how to join, where and when we meet, forthcoming events and some photos of the band (apologies in advance for these!)

Do you play Brass, Woodwind or Percussion?

The Concert Band forms part of the Music Players Society and has been around for five years. There are six groups in the society, and we are the largest. You dont need to audition to be in the band; you just need to come along to a rehersal if you play brass, woodwind or percussion.

The band is so popular because it gives the chance for all students to continue playing music whilst studying, with a big social emphasis. There are loads of socials each semester and a tour in Semester 1; we went to Newcastle last year and are going to London this year. As well as all this, we perform two formal concerts a year. So just come along!

The Committee 2002-3

The band is run by students and each year we get a committee together so that things run smoothly in the band. Here is whose who this year:

Paul Skinner (Music Director): This is the third year Paul has been chair and continues to keep things under control!

Rachel Upton (Librarian): Rachel (tenor sax) has the stressful job of sorting out our music but manages to stay calm about it and gets our music into the folders!

Eleanor (Publicity): Eleanor (french horn) publicises our concerts and keeps us updated about what is going on.

Clare Hinkley (Socials): Clare (flute) is social secretary and is open for suggestions for places to go!

Nick Cliffe (Concerts): Nick (trumpet) organises the concerts we have each semester; usually we have two formal concerts a year.

Jon Reed (Tour): Jon (trombone) is organising the tour to London this year. Listen out for more information!

Mark Wilson (Website): Well thats me (another flautist). If theres anything else you want to see on the site, email me!

**Welcome back to all the Band since the Xmas holidays! Hope the exams went well!**

**To cover music costs, we ask for £8 from each member. If you havent paid already, bring the money to the next rehersal and give it to Jamie**

**We have loads of socials coming up this term. The first outing will be a pub crawl on February 19th. We are meeting at The Place in Broomhill at 8 p.m.**

**The first rehersal is going to be on February 26th. Still meeting at 7 p.m. till 9.15 p.m. at Ranmoor**

**There is going to be a MPS ball on March 8th. It is only £25 and is bound to be a great night. See Jamie for more info + tickets**

**Finally, it is that time of year again when we have to start thinking about the committee for next year. Would you be interested in standing?**

**This site was last updated on February 19th 2003**
