The ultimate weakness of violence is that it is a descending spiral,
begetting the very thing it seeks to destroy.
Instead of diminishing evil, it multiplies it.

Ethnic Conflict: Why Can't We All Get Along?

Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. saw love, as defined by Jesus Christ, as the only means by which people will be able to fully live in harmony with each other.
Jesus said, "Love your enemies, do good to those who hate you, bless those who curse you, pray for those who abuse you. If you love those who love you, what credit is that to you? But love your enemies, and do good and your reward will be great, and you will be sons of the Most High; for he is kind to the ungrateful and selfish."
This was the heart of Dr. King's leadership: "Jesus is eternally right. History is replete with the bleached bones of nations that refused to listen to him. May we in the twentieth century hear and follow his words--before it is too late. May we solemnly realize that we shall never be true sons of our heavenly Father until we love our enemies and pray for those who persecute us."
