An exciting new book on life on the lower deck in Nelson's Navy - the true story of the author's ancestor, Samuel Blackmore, with Nelson in the Medeterranean Fleet from 1793 to 1802. After two years as an 'A.B.'in 'ships-of-the-line' he spent the rest of this time in the French-built frigate HMS la Minerve, commanded by George Cockburn, one of Nelson's protégés, and became her coxswain.
Samuel took part in the famous Sabina affair (when Nelson himself was on board - he had made la Minerve his flag ship for three months) the Battle of Cape St Vincent and a daring day-time cutting out expedition in Santa Cruz. For these exploits he gained three clasps to his Naval General Service medal. He also earned enough in prize money to buy his own freehold house after the war and afford a servant for the rest of his life. He had the misfortune to be captured, and released, three times, seeing the inside of both French and Spanish prisons.
