Bermuda update and report

Correspondence from Bermuda-Race report of Bermuda International Marathon 20/01/08.

We arrived a couple of days before the Marathon to warm sunny weather, and once recovered from the 8 hour flight, settled into a few days of light jogging along the coast roads and tried to get as much rest as possible.

The marathon was part of a weekend of races, 1 mile, 10km and the finale, the marathon on Sunday. We enjoyed a few pre race events at the Hamilton Princess Hotel on the Saturday, including a talk by Karen Switzer, the first woman to ‘break in’ to the Boston Marathon in 1967, a time when it was unheard of for women to run 26.2 miles as it was considered too dangerous! We also enjoyed some words of wisdom from two Ethiopian entrants, a woman who had come second in the Los Angeles Marathon in 2.20, and a guy who had a PB of 2.10.

Race day came with the usual nerves and fear of the unknown. The weather did seem a little warmer and there was certainly a breeze in the air. Down to Hamilton sea front a good crowd lined the streets, and we tried to calm ourselves with a little chat with other participants, including a 76 year old gentleman from Bro Ddysyni club who had run in Bermuda for many years. He was about to do his 408th Marathon!

The Marathon consisted of two laps of a circuit in the central island. The first few miles we ran at about 8 mile an hour pace, trying to slow down but enjoying the run. However, it soon became apparent that a humidity of 85% and 24 degree sun was going to take its toll. The wind also picked up, and even at the half way point, it was clear this was not going to be an easy race. We both managed the half in under two hours, but the hill at 16 miles was so much harder than the first time around. Water stops every 2.5 miles were very welcome, and essential in the increasing sun. Local people turned out in their droves to cheer everyone on, and we were even treated to a steel band on route! We both suffered quite a lot from 18 miles, and at 22 miles I was able to catch Rob up as he developed crippling calf cramps. We agreed at 24 miles, we would come in together, and tried our best for a sprint to the finish! Our finish time was 4hrs 14mins 57secs. The weather conditions had certainly made for a much more difficult race than anticipated, so a good learning curve for us both.

Later at the awards ceremony we were pleased (and astonished) to both pick up 1st places in our respective age categories, picking up a lovely plaque and $100 each! (and there were more than 3 in each age category-just in case you were wondering !!) Almost as a bonus, the following day we came across four of the lead elite athletes relaxing at one of the local towns. Just had to have a photo as you can see! The Moroccan El Alfoui Boubker, who won the Marathon  in 2.31.21,  agreed the conditions were very difficult, and added  many minutes to his expected time.

See you all soon guys,

Sian and Rob Williams

Rob and Sian set Bermuda on fire

Rob and Sian Williams completed the Bermuda Marathon last Sunday, 20th Jan, and finished in 4hr 14. 57 and 4hr 14.56 respectively in 31st and 30th positions. Sian pipping Rob by one second – will he ever live it down. Well done to both of you.
