This was my take! Regina says MMM! Junk!
For some one that is just starting out polishing the best is a Baldor 1/2 horse buffer in 1725 rpm. They use 6" wheels that can be bought at the hardware store! if you decide you no longer want it just put a ad in the local paper saying that you want to sell it and see how many calls you get! (it is like putting a potbelly in the news letter for $100) If you want one with a little more horse power it is best to move up the a mandrel with a pulley and belt system. It is best to have the mandrel made with 1" shafts because this is the industries standard and wheels are cheaper. If you have a polish shop near by, you can see if they have any throw away buffs. You can still get allot of use from them. By the way check with the shop, you may find that if they know you will be bring them a lot of business, they will give you a good price on polishing. We use three 10 horse Liemondue's that have a variable speed control and use them on about 90 rpm on the plastic (with a 24" buff) and at 150 on bakelite. One thing new polishers should keep in mind that the compound and the material that you remove is in the air where you polish. Some polish contains silicone while some bakelite contain asbestos as a filler. Both will cause bad cancer only if breathed in small amounts and ground very fine (like floating in the air) Do wear a Tyvek suite and wear a approved dust mask. If you will notice there are very few old bakelite polishers left in this world! And guys that retire from the polishing business do not last long either. If you need any more help just send a email. Now back to taking pictures to add to the auction page!
