Welcome to the Northeast of England

From the Peak District National Park in the south, to the Scottish borders in the north, this region of England offers a wide range of opportunities for the tourist, and entertainment for both young and old.

Historical links abound.  The Roman built Great North Road runs the length of the region, though much of it is now bypassed by dual carriageways and motorway sections, but close at hand are the great medieval cathedrals of York, Ripon and Durham.  Hadrian's Wall still stands in places, as a reminder of less peaceful times and most will have heard of the Battle of Stamford Bridge, a battle which changed the course of the nation's history.

The traditional picture of industry in the area has changed out of all recognition over the past 20 years.  Gone are the great coal mining areas of the past around Newcastle and in South Yorkshire.  Sheffield, for so long the home of steel, no longer boasts hundreds of chimney stacks belching out clouds of smoke.  Gone too are the great shipyards on the Tyne.

Many of the sites, which once were home to these industries, have been converted, some to Industrial Estates offering new kinds of employment and others to huge Shopping Centres such as Meadowhall in Sheffield and the Metrocentre in Gateshead.  Old industries die, but new opportunities rise to take their place.

No matter where you may be in this region, you are never far away from the peace and tranquillity of the countryside.  Within the National Parks of Northumberland, the North York Moors, the Yorkshire Dales and the Peak District, the visitor can find solitude or companionship as they walk the fells or travel the Pennine Way from Derbyshire to Scotland.

Here we see a picture of a dynamic region, boldly accepting the challenges of the 21st century, while still holding on to the best parts of its heritage, a region with a wide range of opportunities for work and play.  Fine fishing rivers abound, great rugby, cricket and football teams are here.

Who can resist the charms of the East Coast holiday resorts.  Scarborough, Filey, Bridlington, Robin Hood's Bay and Whitby all have a character of their own and have long attracted the people of the North.  The coastline north of the Tyne has many little-known villages, harbours and bays, well worth seeking out.

So welcome to the Northeast of England.  Truly this is "God's Country."
