Ledbury Poetry Festival launches 2009 Poetry Competition
Budding poets everywhere will be sharpening their digital quills as Ledbury Poetry Festival launches its 2009 Poetry Competition. Ledbury is the biggest poetry festival in the UK and commands huge respect both at home and internationally.
"The Ledbury Poetry Festival has real claims to be the best of its kind in England. Without compromise or flashiness, it provides a rare and genuine joining of place, poetry and people." Carol Ann Duffy, 4 July 2008
Chloe Garner, Festival Director, provides a glimpse of the line-up so far for the 2009 Festival, which runs from 3 – 12 July 2009, she says: “The Festival is already looking very exciting. Two of Britain’s best-loved poets, Roger McGough and Benjamin Zephaniah are appearing. We will also welcome Alice Oswald, Ben Okri, Iain Sinclair, Ruth Padel and Richard Mabey.”
Highly respected, the Ledbury Poetry Competition is renowned for spotting new talent first.
2001 winner Jacob Polley has since published two collections with Picador. His first collection Brink was a Poetry Book Society choice and was short listed for the TS Eliot Award.
2005 winner Mike Barlow went on to win the 2006 National Poetry Competition. His book Another Place is published by Salt Modern Poets.
2006 winner Christopher James’s book The Invention of Butterfly is now published by Ragged Raven Poetry.
Jacob Polley says: “Winning at Ledbury was wonderful.”
The 2009 Competition judge is Daljit Nagra, whose first collection, Look We Have Coming to Dover!, won the 2007 Forward Prize for Best First Collection and was shortlisted for the Costa Poetry Award. He will also run workshops and ‘one to one’ sessions at the 2009 Ledbury Poetry Festival.
