What is the C2C?

Developed by Sustrans, the Sea to Sea (C2C) cycle route is 135 miles long and starts in either Whitehaven or Workington and ends in Newcastle or Sunderland.  It consists of quiet country roads, rugged off road sections, and bleak moorland trails. Even in summer, note needs to be taken of the local weather forecast, and suitable clothing and supplies may need to be taken.

Running through the northern Lake District, it climbs the Pennines, giving good views of the Durham Dales. It emerges in Consett, once one of Britain's major industrial areas.

We chose to ride the Whitehaven to Sunderland route. You can also collect 'stamps' as you progress, which entitles you to buy various items from Sustrans, when you have collected six.

The main 'landmarks' are, Whitehaven, Lorton, Keswick,

Penrith, Langwathby, Hartside, Gariggill, Allenheads,

Rookhope, Consett, Sunderland, Roker Pier.
