Dolly Parton music survey

What it's all about

In March 2007 several Dolly Parton CD's were released in Europe in support of her European tour. It was great to see so many (seven) albums released but closer inspection showed that it was something of a missed opportunity. Inevitably there was a new compilation (Very best of) but there were also plenty of original albums. Six albums never before released on CD (All I can do, New harvest first gathering, Great balls of fire, Dolly Dolly Dolly, Burlap and Satin, Real love) were paired together in three CD's. Three other albums (Jolene, My Tennessee mountain home, Coat of many colors) were re-issued separately but with bonus tracks. At first glance it seems that all Dolly fans were catered for - those who wanted the Hollywood-era stuff and those who wanted the early seventies stuff. I'm a fan of all Dolly's music (except for a couple of albums) but the Hollywood-era fans were the real beneficiaries of this batch of releases.

"New harvest first gathering" was a transitional album that doesn't easily fit in either category, as it draws fans and critics from both groups. Excluding that album, the Hollywood-era fans got three albums making their debut on CD and another that only briefly appeared on CD in the eighties. The only album of this era still to get a CD release is "Heartbreak Express". Pretty good eh? Meanwhile the more traditional fans only got one (All I can do) making its CD debut, together with some bonus tracks, because the three other traditional albums had all appeared on CD before. Apart from those three, only three of Dolly's solo traditional albums from her early RCA years (Joshua, Just because I'm a woman, Golden streets of glory) have been released on CD to this date from the vast number recorded, together with her two Monumment albums (the latter re-titled World of, volumes 1 and 2). The Porter and Dolly duets are even more poorly represented on CD. Only the first (Just between you and me) has been released in its entirety and it is long out of print.

I contacted one of the men involved in putting out the 2007 releases after looking at his website. In his reply, he suggested that I get my own feedback from fans to find out what they wanted. So I've put together this survey to find out what your favorite Dolly songs and albums are. By inference, this will give me an idea about what fans think. I appreciate that it isn't very scientific but at least it's something. I don't know when or even if further releases will come but if there are to be any, perhaps this little survey might have some influence - you never know. Note that I deliberately avoid asking directly what should be re-issued next. It's more a case of finding out what you like (regardless of whether it's currently available), which will tell me much more.

You can find your Amazon account number in the URL at the top of your Amazon profile page. It's a mix of letters and numbers beginning with A; for example, my Amazon account is A2U49LUUY4IKQQ. Just cut and paste it.

When selecting songs and albums, choose as many as you like but I suggest no more than 20 or so. After all, it is only a survey. If you like everything, you'd better just to say so in the comment box.

If your favorite songs aren't included in these lists, please use the comments box (later) to tell me about them anyway. I'll add more songs to the list as necessary. The album lists (which follow the song lists) should include all original albums. If they don't, I've made a serious error. The Porter duets are listed separately, as are any duets that Dolly recorded for other people's albums, except where Dolly also recorded the song for one of her own albums. All other duets and trio stuff are included in the main listings.

Your favorite Porter Wagoner and Dolly Parton duet songs
Note that two songs (Pain of loving you, Making plans) are listed with the Trio tracks as Dolly re-recorded them with Linda and Emmylou. Another track (Poor folks town) is listed with the solo tracks as Dolly re-recorded it for her "9 to 5" album although I agree with the fan who reminded me of it that the Porter-Dolly duet version is better.

Last thing on my mind
Just between you and me
Before I met you
Holding on to nothin'
We'll get ahead someday

We'd have to be crazy
If you go I'll follow you
Is forever longer than always (or 1993 live solo version titled "Longer than always")

Your favorite Dolly Parton songs

Where songs exist in more than one version, I've indicated this except where Dolly recorded it both solo and either live or with Porter - there are so many of those. I made an exception for "To Daddy" because the live version is the famous version. Of course, there are songs that Dolly only recorded as live versions and I haven't forgotten those.
