Match Reports - 2007/2008 Season
Bridgnorth 2nd XI – 4, Montgomery – 3.
Bridgnorth succumbed to the fast ‘attacking play’ of the visitors and went behind early in the first half of this Shropshire League Match.
The defence rallied well with goalkeeper, Becky Harris, outstanding.
Captain Jayne Wright equalised just before half time, after a shot from Ashleigh Garbett rebounded off the post to give her a ‘tap in’.
Montgomery briefly took the lead again only for Wright to level the score from an acute angle.
Soon after that, Ashleigh Garbett scored to give Bridgnorth the lead but that was short lived when the visitors scored a ‘disputed’ goal.
Spurred on by the perceived injustice Fay Wier collected the ball from the restart, beat half of the opposition’s defence and smashed the ball past the keeper.
This was an excellent team performance because Montgomery are a very strong side and could have overwhelmed the home team.
Nola Hamilton and Lucy Cottam were named players of the match.
Wem – 2, Bridgnorth 2nd XI – 0.
The omens looked bad for Bridgnorth when, league leaders, Wem took an early lead in this Shropshire League match at Shawbury.
The home side’s fast attacking style threatened to overwhelm them but, this proved not be, the defence held firm, the midfield battled and contested for the ball and the forwards’ skill and speed gave the Wem defence a hard time.
Bridgnorth were unlucky not to have a penalty stroke awarded, which if converted could have changed the outcome of the game.
Wem pulled further ahead midway through the second half but Bridgnorth kept pressing right to the last minute with a succession of penalty corners.
‘Player of the match’ was goalkeeper Becki Harris who used nearly every part of her body to keep the score down.
Sunday 2.12.07
The girls played well on very windy day. There were some good individual performances but unfortunately they did not play as a team until the last game.
Their opposition was mixed to the extent they played Telford and Wrekin who fielded a very young side, more like U11 with one U13, the other teams such as Whitchurch and Ludlow seemed to field very tall 13 year olds.
In their final game against Market Drayton they managed to play the ball about nicely and there was some nice link up play. Ruth Goss played in goal (not her usual position) and adapted very well.
They played 6 10 minute games and it all ran smoothly and on time.
Results:
Bridgnorth 3 Telford and Wrekin 0
Bridgnorth 0 Ludlow 1
Bridgnorth 0 Whitchurch 1
Bridgnorth 0 Wem 1
Bridgnorth 1 Market Drayton 1
The team were Ruth Goss, Naomi Goss, Chloe Lewis, Alex Wilmot, Leanne Halpin, Zoe Mountford,Emily Hay and Georgina Hill.
Bridgnorth - 1, Presteigne – 5
Presteigne were much the stronger side and were 2 – 0 up at half time.
The home team battled well and had their chances, but it was the visitors who increased their lead by 2 more before Ashleigh Garbett pulled one back at a penalty corner.
Presteigne added another and came out deserving winners.
This was always going to be a hard game so credit is due to Becci Harris (player of the match) in goal and Alex Morton in midfield, who worked hard to keep the score down.

Bridgnorth continued in determined fashion and were unlucky to concede an equaliser just before the half-time break.
In an entertaining second half Bridgnorth pressurised Alderley Edge and an excellent move down the left-hand side of the pitch led to Nola Hamilton slotting the ball in at the back post for Bridgnorth to take a deserved lead. In the final five minutes Alderley Edge pressed for an equaliser but a determined Bridgnorth defence were not to be beaten and Bridgnorth finished the match worthy winners.
This was a positive and determined team performance and the squad hope for a favourable draw in the next round. Thanks to all the supporters who made the trip up North – it was great to see that we outnumbered the home support!

Jayne Wright scored 5, Jenny Young 1 and Mel Hill 1.
Captain Emma Broad was voted ‘best defender’ and Jayne Wright, ‘best attacker’.

26th February 2005
Ludlow 0 Bridgnorth 7
Bridgnorth could have been forgiven for starting a little slowly in this
late and extremely cold fixture away at Ludlow, but it was just the
opposite, with Sue Ealey scoring her first goal strait from the whistle.
Vicki Bale doubled the lead shortly afterwards from a well hit short
corner. Bridgnorth didn't have it all their own way with stand in keeper
Fay Weir making some excellent saves and Stef Kent cleared one off the
line. Sue Ealey struck for her second shortly before half time taking
Bridgnorth into a 3-0 lead at the turn around. The second half was even
more one sided, with both defender Vicki Bale and Sue Ealey completing
hatricks. Mel Hill made some fantastic runs down the right wing, one of
which ended in a great goal for Jayne Wright.

like a different team, creating numerous chances. Jayne Wright
deflected in the second after Wendy Barker struck a free hit right into
the danger area. Jayne was unlucky to be denied soon afterwards when
some terrific quick passing forced to keeper to make an exceptional
save. Mel Hill was voted player of the match.

15th January 2005
Cannock 3rd XI – 1, Bridgnorth 2nd XI – 2.
Bridgnorth deservedly came out on top of this friendly game after going behind within 10 minutes.
They played excellent ‘team’ hockey creating good scoring opportunities and defending well against a younger well organised team.
Bridgnorth’s first goal was scored, just before half time, by Captain Jayne Wright after good approach play by Melenie Hill, who passed from the right wing to Sue Ealey, who in turn, crossed to Wright at the far post.
The second half was very even with both teams playing fast flowing hockey, but it was Bridgnorth who took the lead, with 10 minutes to go, when Melenie Hill’s powerful shot was half stopped by the Cannock keeper and Jayne Wright was on hand to tap the ball in.
In the last 10 minutes Cannock pressed hard for and equaliser but Bridgnorth’s defence held, for a well deserved win.
Player of the match was Georgina Lees.
4th December 2004
Bridgnorth 2nds 2-4 Llanfair
Yet again Bridgnorth Ladies 2nds started their Shropshire League fixture
badly and were punished as a result with 3 early Llanfair goals.
Shortly before half time Bridgnorth pulled one back when Emma Broads
short corner shot was turned in by Jayne Wright on the back post. The
half time team talk seemed to have done the trick again, as Bridgnorth
started passing the ball well and put Llanfair under some sustained
pressure. However, it was Llanfair who scored from a short corner and
stretched their lead. Mel Hill scored Bridgnorths second, from another
short corner, but it was too little too late, and Bridgnorth left
disappointed.
20th November 2004
Bridgnorth 2nds 1-2 Market Drayton
Bridgnorth Ladies 2nds lost 2-1 to Market Drayton, despite having much
of the play in this Shropshire league match. Bridgnorth started brightly
and were unlucky not to score early on, but Drayton weathered the storm
and scored themselves when Bridgnorth were unable to clear the ball from
around their goal. Bridgnorth started the second half looking the more
dangerous but it was Drayton who scored again after converting a dubious
short-corner. Sue Ealey had a shot kicked off the line, and Emma Broad
tucked away the resulting flick. This gave bridgnorth a boost but they
were unable to capitalise, the game ending in disappointment.
Bridgnorth 2nds 3 Ludlow 1
Bridgnorth started badly in this league fixture, and went behind in the
first half after failing to clear their lines despite several
opportunities to do so.
The second half saw a much improved performance, with some quick
passing and effective use of the wings. Soon after the restart Sue Ealey
showed great determination in a goal mouth scramble to push the ball
across for Mel Hill to score.
Bridgnorth quickly took the lead, when Sue Ealey latched on to an
outstanding through ball from Jayne Wright, Sue finished with incredible
skill calmness, lifting the ball passed an out rushing keeper. A great
second half was rounded off when Abby Mercer scored her first goal for
the club, after dribbling into the area past two defenders she neatly
slotted the ball home.
Bridgnorth play away at Market Drayton on Saturday.
Montgomery 0 - Bridgnorth 2nds 3
Wet and slippery conditions made for scrappy game, but Bridgnorth
eventually managed to secure the victory, playing some fast breakaway
hockey in the second half. Goal keeper Tracy Pitchford saved a first
half flick after the ball was kicked on the line. Soon after half time
Bridgnorth were down to 10 players through injury, but they stuck to the
task and got the breakthrough minutes later. Carrie Drummond, Mel Hill
and Wendy Barker had a good move down the right, which Wendy superbly
finished. Sue Ealey scored the second before Wendy added a third with a
powerful strike. Bridgnorth play away at Whitchurch on Saturday.
Bridgnorth 2nds 1 - Wem 1
Bridgnorth were below par against a physically strong Wem side, and in
the end were happy to settle with a point. Wem scored half way through
the first half from a highly disputable short corner. Bridgnorth played
slightly better in the second half and were rewarded with a Sue Ealey
goal. Abby Mercer gave a impressive performance at the back and in
midfield and was voted player of the match.
10/10/04 Ludlow 2nds 2, Bridgnorth 3rds 0
On Sunday a Bridgnorth side containing 10 under 15's and 2 adults
played a friendly fixture against Ludlow 2nd's. The Bridgnorth
youngsters had much the better of the first half with Stef Kent making
some incisive runs down the right hand side. The teams were tired 0-0 at
half time, but unfortunately Ludlow scored two second half goals despite
Marie-Helena Fryman making some excellent saves between the posts.
Hannah Goss had two good attempts from penalty corners and forward Jenny
Young almost pulled one back shortly before the end. With so many good
performances all over the pitch the future looks very bright for
Bridgnorth Ladies Hockey Club.
09/10/04 Welshpool 7, Bridgnorth 2nds 0
Bridgnorth seconds faced a tough test on Saturday, travelling to last
years league winners Welshpool with an under strength side containing
two debutants. Having put 13 goals past Ludlow the week before
Welshpool started strongly and with great confidence, and netted 5
before half time. Bridgnorth battled hard but the opposition was
clearly too strong, goal keeper Tracey Pitchford had another good game
as did Vicki Bale. The seconds face another tough test at home to Wem
on Saturday.
Photo from Shropshire Tournament 2004/5

The Shropshire invitation tournament held at Bridgnorth on Sunday 26th September.
Bridgnorth Ladies 2nds started the season on a high with victory in the
Shropshire Invitation tournament. Facing a strong Wrekin side
Bridgnorth were defending for most of the match with keeper Tracy
Pitchford making a string of fine saves. Jayne Wright managed to score
the only game of the match after a quick Bridgnorth breakaway.
Next up were Whitchurch, the defending champions. They attacked in
numbers from the start, but the Bridgnorth defence stood firm, and the
whole team worked tirelessly to prevent Whitchurch form scoring. With
almost their first attack of the game Bridgnorth managed to get a short
corner shortly before the final whistle. On the second short attempt,
Sarah Walker struck a powerful shot right into the corner to give
Bridgnorth their 2nd 1.0 win.
Needing just a draw from their final match against Ludlow, Bridgnorth
played with confidence to achieve a 3.1 win. The first goal was a
breakaway from Jayne Wright, with Chris Lock rounding off a fluent move
for the second. Sue Ealey finished the scoring but the defence were
slightly disappointed to concede minutes from the end.
