What is Kumon?

It is a simple step by step approach to learning providing an effective means to develop every child to their potential through individualised, self-paced instruction.

Children who learn through the Kumon Method acquire more than knowledge, they also develop concentration, study skills and an ability to learn on their own. These skills enable them to study whatever they want in the future.

Experience at Kumon shows that learning occurs most efficiently when:

The above is acheived because the Kumon path is composed of hundreds of small steps, guiding students forward little by little. Children feel confident moving from one step to the next because the steps are so small. Only when a student has demonstrated complete mastery of one step - both in terms of accuracy and completion time - is it time to move up to the next step.

The Kumon UK home page has a more detailed description of the Kumon system, and also gives some people's experiences of Kumon.

A Typical Session at All Saints Church Rooms

You are greeted by your instructor. You find your plastic folder and exchange your completed homework for new worksheets.

Sit down and do todays work. When you have finished today's work place it in the tray for marking.

Stick your stickers in and do the Number Board while your work is being marked.

When your work has been marked you do your corrections.

You are then free to go home.

The whole visit takes about 30 minutes. Students are encouraged to complete their work independently, but the Instructor is always on hand to help.
