Time to get contentious! And to get astounded...

Just before Bowling there is a lovely village called Old Kilpatrick, dominated by it's handsome kirk and overshadowed by the Erskine Bridge. The village marks the end of the Antonine Wall - a much less well known example of the Roman's in Britain - and there is much evidence of these Roman visitors in the grounds around the area.

However, what is not so acknowledged is that this is the place of St Patrick - the great saint - and it was from here that an angry devil cast a huge rock into the Clyde as the brave St Patrick set out on his mission to Ireland.

Very few people will know that the well that Saint Patrick used remains in Old Kilpatrick. It is now filled in, and the plaque vandalised.

Maybe it's just a case of West of Scotland modesty, maybe there is even a sectarian element to this sad neglect, but surely this site deserves not only to be restored, but to be given enough resources to guard and maintain it for future generations.

Dumbarton District Council and anyone else who has the power to do something should exercise that power - or henceforth hang their heads in shame!
