Our Medal

The proposal to have our own commemorative medal struck, has two advantages. One, it will become a well deserved keepsake in this 200th anniversary year of Trafalgar, to all those who have experienced Spithead. And, it will be a well deserved income for our own charity The Royal Naval Association, who will receive all commission from the sale of the medal.

The medal will be made by Bigbury Mint, of Devon, but unless we are able to find a sponsor, production cannot begin until the design has been agreed and that we can show we have a minimum of 200 veterans, prepared to make a purchase.

When explaining the intended colours of the ribbon - green blue and yellow - we have no difficulty in equating the bright green for the waters of Spithead. The black separating lines are for the remembrance of silent shipmates, while the yellow stripe represents the lights from shore at night. The deeper blue outer stripe represents the surrounding sea.

The medal itself will be cast in polished bronze, with a battleship at anchor as its motif. The reverse of the medal will show the Solent Forts and have an inscription commemorating the Man o’War Anchorage. The solitary clasp will bear the name of Spithead on it. Production of the medal depends on popular demand. Watch out for the design, shortly.

If you have already registered, and like the idea of a commemorative medal, please contact us.

Only Registered Spithead Veterans are eligible.
