Your favourite TV memories: The Singing Ringing Tree/Thunderbirds

Comments:
A few years ago a friend of mind started telling me of a fairy tale he remembered, which was shown on the BBC childrens hour in the 60's. I could not belive it. I thought I was the only person in the whole world who had witnessed this magical adventure. The problem was that neither one of us could remember it's title........ Two days ago I was at a dinner party and as the evening wore on we all started reminiscing about our favourite old TV shows. As I was describing the story of my particular favourite (to blank faces I may add), a friend shouted out "The Singing Ringing Tree".......I nearly fell of my seat. Suddenly it all fell into place. I phoned my friend (at 2am in the morning) and gave him the news. His reaction was similar to mine. The next day I found this site and I was amazed to see so many people who remembered this fantastic tale. Within an hour I had ordered the DVD version (plus one for my friend for christmas)from Boxoffice.com. I cannot wait to see it again and again and again .........I hope it arrives in time for christmas day.........I can't belive how exited I am. Maby it's because the Princess was the first girl I ever fell in love with ....and I was only 10 years old.

I couldn't quite beleive it when, after idly typing in the search words 'The Singing Ringing Tree' this sight came up. I immediately became nostalgic and emotional. TSRT had a huge impact on me as a young lad (I'm 32 now)and I still have flashbacks in the form of a barely-remembered, glorious, visually sensual, surreal, sinister and to me,somehow erotic dream. The princess was the first woman I ever loved. I remember I may have been about eight or nine years of age at the time and I found this woman utterly b witching. I would gawp in complete enrapture at her - to me she was the most beautiful, otherworldly and exquisite thing I had ever seen! Seeing pictures of her now still makes me feel 'all funny'! Throughout my life I have always had an interest in the unusual, sinister, bizarre and erotic and I would say that TSRT most probably laid the foundations for this, along with other European children's programmes. A huge thankyou to all those individuals responsible for helping us to relive a small part of our innocent childhoods again. My only dilemma is whether to order the video of TSRT - would it be the end of the dream or the begining of a whole new love affair Lastly to all those TV nostalgics out there I can wholeheartedly recommend 'Mrs. Slocombes Pussy - Growing Up In Front of the Telly' by Stuart Jeffries. Brilliantly written and evocative. I guarantee that at times you'll be thinking," I could have written this! This is EXACTLY how I felt at the time!". Trust me,you won't be disappointed. Warm wishes to everyone. Kevin, Yorkshire

Thankyou, Thankyou, I've lost count the people I've asked about TSRT (Only I couldn't remember the name of the series), nobody had a clue what I was talking about and like many of you I started to think it had been a wonderful dream. Then just tonight I w tched an advert on TV for METZ (with the catchphrase, "beware of the judderman") I mentioned to my wife how it reminded me of a tales from europe series I'd watched as a kid, she nearly fell off her seat, "The singing ringing tree" she shouted, suddenly it had all come back to her, our kids watched in amazement as we danced about the room. Now I've just founf this sight great stuff. Just one more thing, does anyone remember a Kids program from earlt 60's where a little girl (puppet) pushed a button which was near her belly button and this gave her a wish, or was that another dream.

Here's some interesting news! The Singing Ringing Tree has today (31st October) been released as a Region 1 DVD in the US. According to one website, perhaps the most exciting difference between this version of TSRT and the one released by "Sound and Media is that it contains the version broadcast by the BBC with English narration! It is one of four "Tales from Europe" that are being released on DVD in the US by a company called "Hens Tooth". The others titles are: "The Golden Goose", "The Devils Three Gol en Hairs" and "The Story of Little Mook". They can all be purchased separately at the recommended retail price of $24.95 each. However, I notice that Amazon.com are currently offering all these titles for just $17.46 each (that's about £12.47 to your cred t or debit card!) airmail postage at Amazon is $7.95 for the first disk and $1.95 for each additional disk ordered. Before you dash off and buy a copy however, perhaps I should just mention that we in the UK are generally sold Region 2 DVD players. Many o them - especially the cheaper ones have the potential to play Region 1 disks by typing a code into the machine via the remote control. You would need to search the net under the make and model of your machine to find this as it is not generally published in the instruction manual! All other DVD machines that don't respond to this code breaking can be "chipped" by a professional to play any disk offered to it! If you'd like to take a look at the disk on the Amazon website, just click or paste the following link into your internet browser: http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/B00004YS9R/qid%3D973019192/002-0264372-7016009 Happy Hunting, Paul

Being cut-off by the East Sussex floods, surfing the net is helping us through our holiday. And we found a site on the Singing Ringing Tree! It didn't scare me as a kid, but it did totally entrance me and, yes, that fish did stick in the mind. The whole idea of transformation was fascinating to me - what was it like to be a bear? I probably thought the princess looked like my mum, but a bit less unpleasant. Great stuff - when the vid comes out at a reasonable price (like, £5.99), I want it for Christmas br>

For the past 25 years I have been haunted by dreams of a giant fish! I see this fish everywhere - at the foot of lamp-posts on the Thames, in Roman murals, in fountains. For years I have wondered why. Then, last year I was in a record shop in Brighton and I saw a leaflet about the Singing, Ringing Tree (I guess it was a special showing) and suddenly I had an amazing regressive experience..which my husband could not comprehend! Since then I have been searching for details on the film..and tonight I use Ask Jeeves and found your site! THANKYOU. I have bookmarked this site and hope I never lose it! I have also printed the picture of the fish to carry with me as a reminder of the f lm that affected my life! (P.S. I must have been seeing the 1970's repeats...but my husband, who is 9 years older than me can't remember it at all)

THE SINGING RINGING TREE...Scared,i was bloody petrified while watching this Magical film by Francesco Stefani (written by Paul Annis)as i was only about six at the time, and it was on the telly ...and it was in black and white...AND IT WAS REAL!!! it was just so Wierd you had to keep on watching,i went around for months afterwards being nice to little people and old ladies JUST IN CASE they were witches ,or knew anyone that was!!!.....just dont turn me into a bear ! AND WHATS WITH THE FISH? stark black and white realism (although ive recently learnt it was made in colour)combined with Psycological horror and dubbed on voices (which added to the bewitchment) i could accept all of this at the time, until it got to the flaming great fish,do you need a lift across the pond bit? This was taking my fragile hold on reality just TOO far,my psyche went off to dwell in another realm and never really came back! They dont make them like this anymore...Sublime. GEB.

It's amazing how I forgot I remembered things 'til I saw them again! Does anyone remember a character or a programme called "Joe". As far as I remember it was a "still animation" about a young boy, who I seem to remember had very rosy cheeks. I have not been able to find anything about this. Also "Bleep and Booster" from Blue Peter, does anyone know of any sites with pictures of them?

I first found this site about 8 months ago. I have always tried to find information about The Singing Ringing Tree which was macabre and surreal (according to my memory). The Metz advert reminds me of it and I think might be influenced by it although I ave not seen TSRT since I was a kid - I am 41 - Is it something that people of my age remember +/- a few years. Hope to see it soon. Someone mentioned the Tinderbox Man - I remember this story vividly - but cannot remember it from television - the three dogs were really scarey.

Further to my rant about "The 10th Kingdom", did anyone catch Channel 4's Alice in Wonderland. I thought it was great. The FX were sparing and subtle, while the presentation managed to sidestep the usual predictable dramatisations that have concentrated on the pervy, insane or wacky element. Did any of you with Sky One catch that piece of utter pants that is "The 10th Kingdom" Despite a tremendous build-up from Sky it had no plot and couldn't make up it's mind if it was a camp pastiche or an adult fantasylike the excellent Buffy spin-off Ang l. It just goes to prove that spending millions of Dollars on sophisticated special effects is no match for the charm, plot and simple (ok primitive) special effects of the Singing Ringing Tree. I hardly feel that in 43 years time there will be a websit devoted to 'The 10th Kingdom' Did anyone else catch it?

My sisters and I thought we were the only people who remembered The Singing Ringing Tree, I have even been accused of making it up. It was only when the Fast Show did a piss take of it that I realised there were others out there who remembered it too, I'd just never met any of them! I'm also trying to find anyone who remembers a fitness guru called Ed Allen. He presented a short programme which was only ever screened during the summer holidays and was on ITV (I think) directly after the mornings childrens rogramming had fininshed. The show basically consisted of Ed (resplendent in a powder blue leotard) demonstrating some light exercise routines an a balcony overlooking some california scenery. It's not really a childrens show but I'd love to find somebody else who remembers this slightly camp and somewhat bizarre show.

Has anyone else noticed that the limited Edition box set containing the Singing Ringing Tree isn't exactly Limited in reality? It's a bit of a shame that the box's are unumbered, or come without limited edition authentication. The presentation is very good and it is fantastic to have a copy at last, but, if the set is indeed limited it should say so on or with the packaging. (I wonder if they have any DVD plans?) However, this is just a small gripe as overall Network Video have done an excellent job and I would recommend the set to anyone who even vaguelly recalls the programme(s) from their childhood. You can be sure that there is a Singing Ringing Tree for every generation but the difference today is the advent of video, and very soon DVD recording. Most things screened are recorded by at least a few people and TV broadcasts beyond the advent of video will mean that most memories of programmes will be satisfied from a collector somewhere or even kept by that person from childhood (if not by the brodcaster/originator). While we all retain memories of things we may or may not have seen on TV as very young children, children of the 50s, 60s and early 70s may be the only generations who experience the Singing Ringing Tree phenomenom. We are very fortunate that the original print was retained as it looks like the BBC returned or erased their copies when their contract terminated. Although it would have been nice to have the original BBC narration, now it is clear it has definitely been erased it's the final part of a special broadcast that remains locked in the memory of a small amount of UK adults. In a funny way the narration is now the

I think my half Dutch 9 year-old daughter will like it, too. My Dutch husband doesn't remember it, and I don't know if it was shown on Dutch television. I was bor in 1957, by the way.

Yet I have thought of it from time to time, and hoped to see it again. I was born in 1958 so it hit me at just the right age. Strangely The Tinder Box was also never forgotten, though not remembered with as much awe and affection...Noggin the Nog was fantastic as well, Oliver Postgate's?? narration was just awesome. GOT IT !! The video box set arrived last week and it was great to see The Singing Ringing Tree again - and in colour !! Now I remember why the big fish stuck in my mind so vividly - I'd forgotten that one of my scary bits was when the fish, (with the prin ess on its back), sinks to the bottom of the moat. The Princess is fine - oh yes the birds were on hand for her - but I never found out if the fish got savved !! I now recall how my parents tried to tell me that it was o/k, but I was never quite convinced !! I'm also glad to have The Tinderbox as one of the set - I'd forgotten all about the poor soldier, and the 3 HUGE dogs. Snow White, and Rumplewhatshisname's make up the rest of the set and they're every bit as good too !!

How great to find that I am not alone in remembering TSRT with so much affection. It must be over thirty years since I last watched it, monochrome on TV. If I'm honest I would much rather see it again that way, black and white with the English narration ; shameless nostalgia, I know. I have the first two Robinson Crusoe videos. Hearing that opening music again after so long truly sent a shiver down my spine ! My thirteen year old was not overly impressed but my eleven year old loved it. I would like to see their reaction to TSRT. Woul they be as fascinated as I was ? I hope so. I finally saw TSRT on Saturday in Brighton and it was even better than I hoped or remembered. It was good to see all of the children just as spell-bound as I was when I watched it 23 years ago(not so good to see a woman in the foyer trying to bribe a litt e girl to pretend to be with her so she could get in, offering her sweets as payment - exactly what the cinemas are afraid of!!). I had forgotten lots but it all came flooding back. I actually cried at the end which was a big shock. I hadn't expected to do that! Think I went back to my childhood. This year, instead of the usual Xmas tree I created one by using willow branches painted silver and hung with nothing but glass baubles. I lit it from underneath with a single spot. As soon as my brother walked in he loved it and said how much it reminded him of The Singing Ringing Tree. I could only vaguely remember seeing this on telly years ago, so here I am, enlightened by your site. Thank You. Lynette.

At last I have some detailed written evidence about this series that stuck so firmly in memory as a child. About 10-years ago I mentioned it to someone at a party but could only remember the dwarf, a cave, and an escape across a frozen lake. I was amazed to find loads of people the same age (now 40) could also never forget it. Can't wait to get the video and show my 3-boys what real inventive tv was all about.

I was thrilled to find this site. I was beginning to think that my brother and I were the only people who remember this series. All the scenes came flooding back to me after reading your guestbook. I remember the bear having the deepest impact on me, to t e point of often pulling the elasticated sleeves of my coat over my hands and pretending to be one. Sad I know, but I must have only been about eight or nine at the time. Two questions really: A: Does anyone have access to a copy on video or even on cinema film. If so, I'm sure I could arrange a viewing in Brighton. B: Does anyone remember a film or series about a boy who grew a tail. This has been bugging me for ages and I'm beginning to think I dreamt it. It was on around the same time as The Singing Ringing Tree and I believe it was foreign, but I might be wrong a out that. Please put me out of my misery. Tks. Mike.

I saw the film on Saturday, and at the beginning it said that it was based on a fragment of a Brothers Grimm story. I have been unable to find the story in books about traditional fairy tales or on the net. Perhaps it went under a different name. Anyone k ow? Anne Geelhaar wrote the film version, and Peggy Miller rewrote the BBC version. Selina Hastings wrote a book, which she said was close to Miller's version, but seems to be very different from the film.

I was having a few drinks with friends the other night and inevitably the conversation turned to early TV memories. One such programme was "Quick before they catch us" - a low budget young person's adventure series from the mid-60's - does anyone remembe it or know anything about it? It only lasted for a few episodes but I remember watching it on Saturday nights. The first episode I recall was set at night and revolved around some teenagers who found an abandoned house with a Camera Obscura in it that nabled them to view the outside world from within a room. That's all I remember apart from the fact that it had a poppy theme tune by Chad and Jeremy. So am I the only one who remembers it?? And there's more, this time it’s a Tales from Europe related question and it's really fuzzy. I vaguely recall a story set in a sort of Renaissance period Italy? Germany? Hungary? I dunno. At one point the hero of the story a small boy with slightly spik hair joins a circus or a group of entertainers. He gets hold of one of those trick knives where the blade conceals itself in the handle to looks like you've been stabbed. Anyway at some point in the story, aforementioned small boy uses a piece of wood o prevent the blade in the trick knife from moving and hey presto one offensive weapon. It's got me stumped because a) I can't remember any more about it b) I'm losing my marbles and imagined the whole thing - please someone put me out of my misery!!!

Great Site. Has anybody any information on a, probably East European, film version of Hans Anderson's "The Steadfast Tin Soldier"? This is the story about a toy soldier who falls in love with a toy dancer. After being washed down a drain and swallowed y a fish, he is returned home only to be thrown in the stove fire with his beloved dancer. In the morning all that is found in the ashes is his metal heart. I remember being really freaked out by a film of this in the late 1960s or very early 1970s but have yet to trace any details. Help!

I'm a 27 year old writer. Was about 5 when I saw Singing Ringing Tree on TV in Scotland. I've never forgotten it and have often dreamt about it... the colours, the sounds, the water (did the river sparkle like the water in Barnaby The Bear?). My most prec ous possession (apart from my guitar) is an antique fish necklace which I love because it's segmented and it moves like the big golden fish rescued by the Princess which in turn saves her life. I recently acquired a beautifully illustrated Out of Print ve sion of the book from Amazon.com. CAN'T WAIT TO BUY THE VIDEO!!! Cant believe this is going to be out on video! I take its the original and not some dodgy remake! What would make this site complete, though, is a photo of the evil dwarf. I still shudder when I think of him...

There was an interesting article in "The Scotsman" on 24 May. Under a half page picture of the princess on the back of the big fish is loads of information, which filled in gaps in my knowledge. I will write more about it and put it on the site.

Apart from watching my Irish father jumping up and down in front of the television when England won the World Cup in 1966 (yes, he was watching the game!), The Singing Ringing Tree provided the earliest of my viewing memories. As that “traumatised” gener tion ages, I’m sure I’m not alone as the somnial prisoner of the evil dwarf’s nefarious meddling. We seem to spend much our lives exorcising our devils and in revealing our dreams. Reading your web page on The Singing Ringing Tree today helped unveil an accomplice of nearly 35 years. And he’s a distant relation of one of the characters of my disposition!

How wonderful to find so many people with the same fond memories of TSRT as myself. All the entries in the guestbook have a similar theme and there can be no doubt that this film touched a chord in many, many (old) children (think of all those who are no on the internet). After hearing the Women's Hour feature in 1992 (I think) I had given up hope of ever seeing the film again. Whilst I am all too aware that I cannot see the film with the eyes of a eight year old, I look forward very much to seeing it gain and this time in colour (I hope). There is one East European film that I recall seeing from the same era on BBC. It involved a boy who was something of an outcast at school and tried to make his classmates jealous by pretending to be a millionaire by painting his own banknotes. It worke at first but eventually he was found out and I can't remember the rest! Can anyone help? Thanks for the website and the memories it has brought back. I typed TSRT into a metasearch engine several months ago and got nothing back: I was knocked out to find you this time round.

Tim, do you know if there are plans to release "Three Hazelnuts for Cinderella" too? Also, will the SRT be on one tape, or will there be a couple of the "Tales from Europe" on each tape? The distribution company? Excellent news - roll on September I say.. . (As an aside, strangely enough, the only episode of White Horses I really remember is that one with the pig finding the truffles and then *amazingly* one of the White Horses is able to find them too!!)
