Here's a great trick to get you started in magic...

Voyage to Disaster

Effect
The magician tells the audience about a family on an ill-fated voyage. The spectator randomly mixes the card but yet, at the finale they have somehow managed to sort themselves out.

Set-up
Take out all of the picture cards and the Ace's from a pack of playing cards. Separate the cards into the four suits (clubs, hearts, spades and diamonds). Make sure that each pile of cards is in the following order from top to bottom when the cards are face down: Ace, King, Queen, Jack. Once you have done this collect all of the piles together by putting one pile on top of another.

Method and Presentation
Here we go…try to learn the patter (presentation) at the same time as the trick (remember that magic is 10% trick and 90% presentation!!!)

- "I'd like to recount a tale of terror…of a voyage across seas which changed the lives of four families. It all started innocently enough, when they decided to go on a luxurious cruise."

Point at the pile of cards.

- "They set sail in bright sunshine but soon realised that the ship was heading for a storm on the horizon. It arrived quicker than they expected and soon they were thrown left..."

Have the spectator cut some cards from the packet, place them to the left and complete the cut (put the bottom half on top),

- "and they were thrown right…"

Have the spectator cut cards from the packet, place them to the right and complete the cut,

- "…and they were thrown forward,"

Have the spectator cut a cards from the packet, place them to the front and complete the cut,

- "…without warning the boat hit a sand bank and started to sink! All of the passengers were thrown overboard and washed up onto four different islands…"

Deal the first card of the packet to position #1 (see diagram), the second card to position #2, the third card to position #3, the fourth card to position #4, then go round again as if dealing four hands of cards (i.e. fifth card goes to position #1, sixth to #2 and so on)

- "but, as you can see, the tale ends happily as…"

Turn over first pile

- "all the (whatever the suit may be) were on one island,"

Turn over the second pile

- "all the (whatever the suit may be) were on another island" and so on…

Practice this trick to get the presentation as enjoyable as possible and you are well on the road to becoming a great entertainer in magic.
