Denethor was a proud man, tall, valiant, and more kingly than any man that had appeared in Gondor for many lives of men; and he was wise also, and far-sighted, and learned in lore. [...] When Denethor became Steward he proved a masterful lord, holding the rule of all things in his own hand. He said little. He listened to counsel, and then followed his own mind.
Appendix A, Lord of the Rings

The 26th Ruling Steward and Lord of Gondor, Denethor was an epic character: cunning and reliable, he fought Sauron for over thirty years through the palantír before finally giving in to despair. Even after Sauron had revealed the full might of Mordor to him, Denethor still fought on, sending his older son to Rivendell and his younger to Ithilien. And when it seemed he had lost both in his struggle to preserve Gondor, Denethor made the only end he — in his grief and madness — thought honourable. He died as well as he had lived.

Here at the Steward's Scrolls, we strive to stay true to JRR Tolkien's characterisation of Denethor. You will find stories that seek to capture the man that Denethor was. So pour yourself a drink, pick out a story, and enjoy yourself.

Cheers,
Liz and Marta
