Gondorian Military Organisation and Government: some thoughts

Originally published at HASA, an interpretation of how the military and government might have worked in Gondor, based on extrapolations from canon, offered as a source of ideas for other authors writing about Gondor and the Stewards’ family in the years leading up to the War of the Ring.

Warning This essay consists of a great deal of speculation and extensive extrapolation from the very scarce source materials provided in Tolkien’s writings.

Author’s Note: A great deal of credit for the information here must be given to Gwynnyd, who helped me work out these ideas in private e-mails — the conclusions I’ve drawn are entirely mine and Gwynnyd may well think differently on some (or many) points.
