We are 9th Abingdon St. Helens Guides. Abingdon is a historic town just south of the City of Oxford. St. Helens Church is the second widest church in England, being 3m wider than it is long. People have been worshiping on the site for over 1000 years and the present building dates back to 1538. The guides work in patrols some of the time and take part in planning their programme and organising things themselves. At the moment we have about 10 guides between the ages
of 10 and 14 years one leader and one unit helper. These are like interest badges but they work as a patrol
to achieve tasks that they have chosen and set themselves. Examples
of the Go For Its! are: on the move, don't forget your toothbrush, showtime,
teamwork, chocolate etc. Recently we have had a very enjoyable ‘pet night’ with a dog, several cats, rabbits, hampsters etc. joining us for the evening! During the summer term we usually spend two evenings up at Youlbury Scout Camp enjoying the outdoors with archery, singing and camp fires. We have also arranged a treasure hunt around Abingdon. We encourage the guides to think of others and to this end have baked cakes to be sold in the market square for charity, made shoe bags for, and helped at, a table top sale to raise funds for Jubilee House, manned the Hoopla Stall at St Helens Church Fete, and most recently organised a sale for Guides affected by the Tsunami Earthquake. We take part in the Remembrance Day Services and Parades in Abingdon. All the girls have the opportunity of camping in the summer. |
