THE STRING QUARTET OF LONDON

'It was clear that we had made a very good decision in sponsoring your 'ensemble' for this event. The music before and during dinner was of a very high order and enjoyed by all I met. Thank you for participating in such a wonderful way.'

Robert Ward, Director of Chiswell Associates Limited (investment managers) who sponsored a performance at Durham Castle April 2003

The String Quartet of London consists of top, multi-prize-winning graduates of the prestigious Royal Academy of Music, London, all of whom are principal string players of the London Ensemble, and who have performed and recorded under such eminent conductors as Haitink, Giulini, Rostropovitch, Ashkenazy and Sir Colin Davis at major concert halls and international festivals across the world.

The Quartet is suitable for any occasion. Their charismatic and energetic performances delight concert audiences and enhance any special event, whether it be wedding ceremony/reception, party, corporate event or private function.

Recent performance highlights include the Mark McCormack Celebration Concert at Hampton Court Palace, London, alongside such artists as Dame Kiri te Kanawa, Jose Carreras, and a Gala performance at Durham Castle.

Once a booking has been confirmed, Andrew will interact with you and offer advice and suggestions as to how to make your special event as perfect as possible.

The String Quartet of London have an extensive repertoire, including classical and light classical works, jazz standards, show tunes and pop arrangements, and they can also arrange any special or favourite piece you may have.

The String Quartet of London also perform many pop songs and jazz standards that are specially arranged. They are completely mobile and require no power supply, this makes them an ideal choice for a civil ceremony or a summer wedding or event, where guests may move outside for drinks and back inside for dinner.

They quartet have the flexibility not only to play classical music but also lighter, jazzier music during drinks and dinner. They can easily accompany any instrumental or vocal soloist.

They do not take up much space and are ideal for smaller events, parties or wedding venues. They make ideal entertainment for an anniversary or a birthday party during the cocktail reception.

Testimonials and Reviews

They performed brilliantly – with  sensitive empathy for the music and charming delicacy. Beethoven’s bidding that ‘music should set the human soul alight’ was satisfied to perfection.

Hannover Zeitung

They had a calm, unruffled integrity of delivery, ensuring that every component fell securely into place.

The solo of the night came from Alasdair Strange in the Cello Concerto No 2 by Penderecki. I suspect he will turn out one of contemporary music’s survivors – especially if cellists carry on playing him with Strange’s concentration and flair.

The Independent

Alasdair Strange was the marvellous cellist.

Alasdair Strange was principal cellist of the National Youth Orchestra of Great Britain from 1990-92 and principal cellist of the European Union Youth Orchestra from 1993-1995.

Studying with Derek Simpson, he won an Associated Board Scholarship to the Royal Academy of Music in 1992.  He won the Alessandro Pezze Prize in his first term and later the May Mukle, Harry Isaacs and Florence Hooten/David Martin Prizes.  In 1996 Alasdair was awarded his DipRAM, the Academy’s highest award for performance as well as the Carnegie Fellowship.

In January 1993, Alasdair was the soloist in Penderecki’s Cello Concerto no. 2 with the National Youth Orchestra of Great Britain at the Barbican Hall to great critical acclaim. Another performance at the Colston Hall, Bristol, was broadcast live on BBC Radio 3.

Alasdair’s other concerto performances include the Dvorak, Brahms Double, Boccherini G and Rococo Variations. He has performed the Elgar Concerto on many occasions including at the Chichester and Dulwich Festivals and the Saint-Saens at St. James’ Piccadilly and with the Brent Symphony Orchestra. Alasdair was privileged to have worked with Gyorgy Ligeti on his cello concerto for a performance at the Royal Academy‘s Ligeti Festival in 1995.

Alasdair has given recitals at the Southwark Festival, the Kulture Kreis Festival in Hannover and at the Purcell Room as well as at many music societies. In 1997, Alasdair performed with Lynn Harrell, Dmitry Sitkovetsky, Freddy Kempf, Nicola Loud and Daniel Hope at the prestigious Diamond Chamber Music Series at the Royal Academy.

Alasdair plays on a G.B.Rugieri cello made in 1695 in Cremona.

Conny Lindgren, born in Stockholm in 1976, started playing the violin at the age of five.

In 1997, he was awarded a scholarship to study violin with Erich Gruenberg at the Royal Academy of Music, London and graduated with a DipRAM, the Academy’s highest award for performance having earlier been awarded the BMus and LRAM diplomas.

Conny is a frequent performer of chamber music and is a member of the Farrington Ensemble (violin, clarinet, cello and piano), performing extensively throughout Europe.

He has been leader of the Nordic Orchestra, co-leader of the European Union Youth Orchestra (EUYO) and a member of the Jeunesses Musicales World orchestra, having performed at major venues throughout Europe and in South America, China, Russia and Egypt with conductors such as Sir Colin Davis, Bernard Haitink and Vladimir Ashkenazy.

Andrew performs regularly as a freelance violist with orchestras such as Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, English Symphony, National Symphony, Brighton Philharmonic, European Sinfonietta, Primavera Chamber Orchestra, and is currently the Principal Viola of the London Ensemble, for whom he has recorded several soundtracks.

Andrew continues to tour extensively, a recent highlight being concerts at the Ulriksdaal Festival in Sweden. Recent concerts include the performance of Tchaikovsky’s Souvenir de Florence with Lynn Harrell and Dmitri Sitkovetsky at the prestigious Diamond Chamber Series in London.
