What  happens when we first call you?

When you call us we will need to know your name and address, the name and age of the student/students, the subject you require tuition in, and the level.  We will need to have an idea of the child's ability, the syllabus he or she is studying, the text books he or she is using and most importantly why they need tuition.

Some parents ring us knowing exactly what sort of tuition they want, whilst others just need some advice about their child's education because they don't know exactly why their child is struggling in a particular subject or what subject to get tuition in.   Basically, the more information you can give us the easier it will be to find the most suitable tutor for your child.

We can then set realistic goals for your child before tuition commences.  You can also fill out an on-line tuition enquiry form to request for a tutor.

How Can Private Tuition Help Me?

Private tuition will help you if:

You have exams in the near future and need help with revision.  The tutor will go over the work with you at a pace that suits you, teach you how to answer exam questions and give you mock tests to measure your progress.

You are finding a particular subject hard at school.  The rest of the class seem to "get It" straight away and you don't want to look silly by asking for help all the time.  The tutor will go over the subject more slowly so that you understand it, you won't be ridiculed or judged because there is no-one there to watch!  This will increase your confidence in the subject and you will find that you are not getting stuck all the time.

You always get good marks in coursework, get brownie points for good work in class but don't do so well in exams.  This is a common problem with many students and most often due to poor exam and revision techniques.  All tutors are trained to teach pupils how to learn effectively and how to tackle exams but they can't sit the exams for you.  It's up to you to put these skills into practice.

You understand the work in class but always get stuck on homework.  The tutor will not do your homework for you, but will show you how to do it.

You're going on holiday and want a crash course in Italian.  One-to-one tuition is much more effective than using other resources for learning a language.  You can learn at your own pace and in a friendly comfortable environment.

How much will it cost?

We charge competitive fees for tuition.  The charge per lesson depends on what level of tuition you need for your child and whether you want tuition at your own home or at the tutor’s home.  All lesson charges are fixed and can vary from as little as £16 per hour to £26 per hour.   There is no additional administration or registration feeEmail us for more details.

How do I pay for the tuition?

You can pay by cheque or cash directly to the tutor after each lesson.  (unless you have booked a block of lessons -see special offers).

What information will I be given about the tutor?

The name and address of the tutor (if tuition is to take place at the tutors home)

The tutors qualifications and experience (with photocopies of degree certificates*)

All tutors on our register are qualified to degree level, and suitably experienced to teach.   They have all been screened for criminal convictions by the criminal records bureau and checked against "list 99" the list of banned teachers.  No tutor can start tutoring unless we have received at least 2 written references from previous employers or academic institutions.

A word of caution:  Many tuition agencies claim that their tutors have been police checked and assume that you have to take their word for it.  It is our policy to show you either a copy of the tutors police clearance certificate or to get the tutor to show the original certificate before the first lesson begins - always make sure that you can see the certificate before tuition proceeds!!!

*These can only be shown with the tutors permission.

Where will tuition take place?

Tuition normally takes place either in the student's home or the tutor's home.  All our tutors live locally, so if you do have to travel to the tutor, you won't have to go very far.  If either of these venues are not suitable then it can also be arranged at the place where you work e.g. offices or shops.

How often will tuition take place?

Tuition can be as often as you like depending on the time your tutor has available and on how much tuition you can afford.  Some people have regular private tuition throughout their schooling whilst others may just have tuition when they are revising for their tests and final exams.  Generally, you can choose the days and times convenient for your schedule, but consistency and regular attendance are essential.

Can parents sit in with their child during the lesson?

We encourage parents to observe the lesson and welcome feedback on the tutor's performance.

How will I know the tuition is working?

We have a policy of providing you with a written progress report after the first four lessons, and then after every twelve lessons.  However you can get a verbal progress report from the tutor much more often than this.

Tell me more about the study and revision skills program.

The study skills program helps students learn how to do their best in and out of school with the most efficient use of their time. Students learn how to study textbooks, take notes, outline, listen effectively, prepare for tests, manage study time, and increase reading speed and comprehension.  They will be taught a 'learning' approach, or basic skills that apply to any subject.

There are currently no provisions within the National Curriculum to cater for these skills. Consequently, teachers are restrained from devoting sufficient time and resources to this area. This can be a major handicap to children as, without sufficient preparation, many children are unfamiliar with the strategies needed to tackle exams.
