index to Phillimore's Marriages 1539-1812
These cover all recorded marriages for the years 1539-1812. There are gaps in the original registers as follows:
'Although the years 1639 to 1660 are the only period [but see my note re Mary I above] when entries in the parish registers are irregular and unreliable. This may not be due to the War: it may simply mean that the vicar - an Independent minister named Carnshew Helme, who described himself as "preacher of the gospel of this place" - had no enthusiasm for such routine clerical duties as keeping an accurate record of births, marriages and deaths' The marriages, as published by Phillimore, were originally transcribed by the late Mr T C Webb at the expense of the late Emma Dent of Sudeley Castle This index is arranged in alphabetical order of surname and includes both brides and grooms - this is to enable searchers to see all the marriage entries grouped together for any particular family, subject to surname variation of course Please be imaginative when searching for 16th and early 17th marriages - some names were preceded by 'a' or 'ap', especially if of Welsh origin and indeed I would suggest you take a look at the letter 'U' for Unknown. Sometimes the person writing the register did not bother to record surnames (especially those of brides) I would just like to reiterate that this index is of Phillimore's Marriages and not the original registers. I have not checked these against the originals, and therefore it is doubly important that, should you find an entry of interest, you must check the original Parish Registers, which are held at Gloucestershire Record Office. At the same time, if I have fouled up somewhere, then please, do let me know So, please select surnames beginning with:
