Mozilla Firefox: Ditch Internet Explorer!
So, why should I get rid of Internet Explorer?
A number of reasons, really.
The main one being security. Microsoft are not popular for a number of reasons, and the majority of Viruses, Worms, Trojans and Spyware are written specifically to exploit Microsoft products. Since internet explorer is what you use to access the web, it's much more likely that you'll "catch" a virus using IE. Firefox, unlike some other browsers, is built on a completely different platform to Internet Explorer, so Viruses etc written for IE don't tend to affect firefox (unlike Netscape). From a security point of view, it's excellent. You always know if you're on a secure page because the address bar goes yellow and padlock icons appear. If these obvious symbols are missing, shop elsewhere! You can also block cookies from specific websites, so the likes of Ad-Click and Doubleclick will no-longer be able to track your surfing habits.
Another reasone is that the browser is better.
It's easier to use. It boasts tabbed browsing, so instead of your Start Menu being full of IE browser tabs, there's only one tab on the Start menu, and you can have a vitually unlimited amount of tabs (seperate windows within the window, if you like) open within the one Firefox window. The browser is also light-weight, ie it doesn't load your computer with stuff you'll never need or use. It allows you to upgrade the browser with free "extensions" - these are basically add-ons that let you do anything, from simple changes in the right-click menu, to full image zooming functions, anonymous browsing, mouse gestures (instead of clicking Back, Forward, Home etc) and even themes - change the appearance to how you want it to look.
Firefox is, and always will be, free. It's Open Source, so people are legally allowed to write new code for it or change it to suit themselves or their company. It's brilliantly customisable for more
advanced users, but it's safe, easy to use and much better than Internet Explorer for every single user. Download it, try it. You've got nothing to lose!
Recommended Extensions:
Download Manager Tweak - Changes the way the download manager displays. Put it in a tab or seperate window if you like.
FireFTP - A tiny, yet fully-featured free FTP client.
Mouse Gestures - Move your mouse rather than type or click. Absolutely excellent!
Adblock - This blocks any advert panels or images (for instance, view Hotmail without a single advert to annoy you!) simply by right clicking and selecting "adblock image". Once you've done that, you'll never see the advert again - this is an excellent way to keep tracking (spyware) cookies off your system. A very helpful man indeed has scoured the internet to find the most common and intrusive adverts. Click here to go to his website and download his most recent Adblock Filters (at the bottom of the page - the files are named by date). Go to Tools>Adblock>Preferences then import the filter text file you've downloaded. Brilliant, trust me!
Show Image - An image not loaded on a page properly? Right-Click > Show Image. Easy as that
Image Zoom - So, you're looking for a map or directions to somewhere and you get a tiny picture to decypher. Worry no more - just Right-Click and zoom the image to whatever magnification level you want.
SwitchProxy - Many people have Broadband connections these days. Most of these connections use static IP addresses. Any site you visit can get your IP address, and this might not be the best of ideas. SwitchProxy allows you to re-route your internet traffic through anonymous proxy servers, so the IP address the website sees is not yours. You can switch between anonymous proxy servers every second if you like (or a more sensible timescale that you choose). This does the same job as Steganos Internet Anonym and it's totally free. You can even use steganos's anonymous servers - just set your "Anonymous Prox List" to http://www.steganos.com/?area=updateproxylist and it'll update automatically every day.
