How We See

Everything we look at is constantly reflecting light, and it's only when that light can enter our eyes that we can see. Most of us never think about sight, or realise what a complicated process it is. Take something simple like looking at a picture. As you look at the picture, the light rays reflected from it entering your eye through the pupil and are made into a clear image by a transparent disc in your eye called a lens. The image then falls on to the lining at the back of the eye, called the retina, which has special cells that are sensitive to light. These cells send signals to the brain, which then makes sense of the picture for you, making out edges and shapes, colours and shades. So, although you may think sight is simple, lots of complicated things will have happened in the split second when you see that picture.
